    Despite the potentially extremely serious impacts of HIV/AIDS on education in Malawi, very little attention had been devoted to this fundamentally important problem. No robust research had been undertaken that systematically analyses all key quantitative and qualitative impacts of the epidemics on education. The study focused on three key questions: A) How has the HIV/AIDS epidemic affected primary and secondary schooling? B) What would be the likely impacts of the epidemic on education provision during the next 10-15 years? C) What should be done to mitigate these impacts?

    IIEP and its partner ministries of education launched the collaborative action research programme was launched in 2003.   4. The Impact of HIV/AIDS on Primary and Secondary Schooling in Malawi: developing a comprehensive strategic response

    Assesses the impact to date of HIV/AIDS on the provision of primary and secondary education in Malawi, providing background information on the schooling system, governement education policy and the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The study is set up to analyze the main areas that determine supply and demand of education. Projections are then made to analyze how the epidemic will impact the school system over the next 10 -15 years and recommends strategies and interventions to mitigate the impact on students and teachers.

  5. Impact of HIV/AIDS on the education systems in the Eastern and Southern African region and the response of education systems to HIV/AIDS: life skills programs

    In the Eastern and Southern African Region (ESAR), the AIDS epidemic is beginning to have a serious impact on the education sector, specifically on the demand for, supply of, and the management and quality of education provided at all levels. The quality of learning outcomes and education will be affected by several confounding factors which will emerge as the pandemic takes a deeper hold in these countries. Education systems and life skill programmes must be developed to reverse this trend and loosen AIDS' hold on ESAR. …
