It also compares current national WASH in Schools (WinS) monitoring indicators against global guidelines.     A safe school is one that is free of danger and possible harm for students, but in reality, violence in schools is a global phenomenon. Moreover, studies in developing countries indicate that school violence is especially prevalent in such settings.   9. An HIV/AIDS knowledge scale for adolescents: item response theory analyses based on data from a study in South Africa and Tanzania

    A 14-item human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome knowledge scale was used among school students in 80 schools in 3 sites in Sub-Saharan Africa (Cape Town and Mankweng, South Africa, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania). For each item, an incorrect or don't know response was coded as 0 and correct response as 1. Exploratory factor analyses based on polychoric correlations showed two separate factors for all sites. …

    The Safe Schools Program has just released the Quantitative Research Instrument to Measure School-Related Gender-Based Violence, which details the sampling methodology, interview guidelines, and suggested preliminary data analysis of a recently conducted study to assess the knowledge, attitudes, practices, and experiences of boys and girls and teachers with gender-based physical, psychological and sexual violence at schools including in the classroom and on the school grounds as well as going to and from school.
