  6. Uganda MOE: Comparative analysis of EMIS data 1963-2001

    Within the Education Statistical Abstract 2001 published by the Ministry of Education and Sports of Uganda, details of the education system in terms of the number of pupils, by gender, schools and teachers are provided from 1963 through to 2001. The only year, over this thirty-eight year period for which there are no figures is 1969 and some of the earlier years do have missing data. All of the figures used in the analysis are drawn directly from the Education Statistical Abstract 2001 and are provided in a table at the end of this publication. …

  7. Modeling the Impact of HIV/AIDS on Education Systems: A Training Manual

    The purpose of this document is two-fold. It serves as a practical training manual for World Bank staff, Ministry of Education planners and other stakeholders who wish to use the Ed-SIDA model in a particular country to assist with educational planning in the face of HIV/AIDS. It also serves as an introduction to the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS, the impact it can have on the education sector, its scale and how this can be captured empirically by the Ed- SIDA model.

    Maintaining and enhancing educational quality in the context of the HIV and AIDS epidemic is particularly difficult because the virus is infecting increasing numbers of teaching and administrative staff in the education sector.     This report summarizes a workshop to launch a pilot project known as the District Initiative to collect school-based HIV/AIDS indicators enabling ministries and planners assess the needs of the districts more effectively. The workshop was organized to introduce the District AIDS action Committees (DAACS) and the Ministry of Education to develop District Education Management Information System or DEMIS.   11. Developing District-Level Early Warning and Decision Support Systems to Assist in Managing and Mitigating the Impact of HIV/AIDS on Education (DEMMIS)

    This paper, presented at the Barcelona International AIDS Conference in 2002, details a pilot project for DEMMIS in districts of KwaZulu Natal province. The pilot project, or district-level Education Management & Monitoring Information System (DEMMIS), was developed to answer the need for regular HIV/AIDS sensitive data gathering systems.The data are captured at month-end in the school and sent to the district office for inclusion in an ACCESS database.The results of this project are presented here.
