  1. Statutory PSHE education: meaningful change supported by busy teachers and school leaders

The purpose of this report is to show how statutory personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education as an entire subject, including but not limited to relationships and sex education (RSE), can be implemented in a way that brings significant benefits while minimising impact on teacher workload and school funding. The PSHE Association Strategic Partners Group urges the Education Secretary and his Department to seize the opportunity to ensure all school children benefit from good quality PSHE education and proceed to consult on statutory regulations for PSHE education in its entirety. …

  2. Picture that: supporting sexuality educators in narrowing the knowledge/practice gap

Teaching about sex and relationships is one of the greatest challenges in not only the combating of HIV and AIDS, but also in preparing the youth for responsible sexual behaviour. Although it seems as if teachers to some extent do feel comfortable with the teaching of sexuality education at school, the question however remains as to whether youth get the information they require. In this article, I present drawings produced by teacher participants in order to investigate the beliefs that teachers hold regarding young people’s needs from sexuality education. …

  3. Go Teachers! Creating a safe and supportive environment for girls at school: A training manual for school personnel and teachers

The Go Girls! Toolkit is designed to support a comprehensive program that aims to reduce girls’ vulnerability to HIV/AIDS by reaching out to communities, schools, parents, boys and young girls using participatory awareness raising, community action items, and skills building tools. 5. Minding the gap in Alexandria: Talking to girls in schools about reproductive health

Reproductive health (RH) is one of the cornerstones of an individual’s health and well-being, and an important component of a country’s human social development. Limited access to RH information among female adolescents can increase their vulnerability to health problems. Therefore, it is important to provide them with accurate and age-appropriate information. In the Middle East and North Africa, cultural norms dictate that girls should not be exposed to information about RH until they are married. …

  8. Rapid appraisal students partnership worldwide/Zambia

Students Partnership Worldwide (SPW) Zambia recently began the third year of its School HIV/AIDS Education Program (SHEP) in conjunction with Zambia's Ministry of Education (MOE). SHEP is implemented by volunteer peer educators selected from a pool of applicants who have completed at least a secondary education and who may have completed tertiary level education. Thus, they are closer in age to students than most teachers, although they are not exactly same-age peers. After an intensive training, volunteer peer educators are placed in same-sex pairs at one of the SPW schools. …

  10. Mitigating the Impact of the Epidemic on Development. Responding to the socio-economic impact of the HIV epidemic in Sub-Saharan Africa: Why a systems approach is needed. The HIV Epidemic and the Education Sector in sub-Saharan Africa

Analyses and responses to the HIV epidemic remain rooted in a mind set which while it was relevant 5 or more years ago may no longer be so. Or at least what is written, said, thought and done about the development implications of the HIV epidemic are no longer sufficient. There is still a lack of clarity about the ways in which development affects the course of the HIV epidemic, such as the role of poverty in transmission of the virus and how families cope with the poverty caused by illness and death. …
