On 16 May 2012, a UNESCO report on homophobic bullying in educational institutions was published. GALE, which is a formal cooperating partner of UNESCO, assisted the consultation process by pointing the way to research, good practices and NGO partners, and by providing input in the publication.   8. The Impact of HIV/AIDS on the University of the Western Cape

    The growing HIV/AIDS pandemic has already has a marked impact on higher education and will continue to do so as the disease intensifies. Higher education institutions have a crucial role to play in developing effective mechanisms to deal with this impact both within the academy and in society. The study forms part of eight case studies of how HIV/AIDS affects some individual universities in Africa. The case studies aim to determine the impact on the university and identify responses of staff students and management that will develope effective policies to combat the epidemic.

  10. HIV/AIDS and gender-based violence: who has the power? A challenge for school management in South African schools

    The crucial distinction between power and force in relation to aggressive masculinity needs to be analysed and understood if preventative intervention is to be successful in the fight against HIV/AIDS. This aggressive masculinity undermines the concepts of negotiation and communication emphasized within most prevention programmes. Two related interventions developed by the Canada South Africa Education Management Programme are also described in the paper.

  11. School health education to prevent AIDS and STD: a resource package for curriculum planners; students' activities

    This handbook for students is the last in a series of three documents designed for educational planners, teachers and students on school health education and the prevention of HIV/AIDS and STDs. It includes some fifty-three student learning activities on prevention of HIV/AIDS and STDs. The activities are divided into four units: 1) basic knowledge on HIV/AIDS and STDs; 2) abstinence and postponement of first sexual contact; 3) practicing safer sex; and 4) counselling and support.
