  2. Developing District-Level Early Warning and Decision Support Systems to Assist in Managing and Mitigating the Impact of HIV/AIDS on Education (DEMMIS)

    This paper, presented at the Barcelona International AIDS Conference in 2002, details a pilot project for DEMMIS in districts of KwaZulu Natal province. The pilot project, or district-level Education Management & Monitoring Information System (DEMMIS), was developed to answer the need for regular HIV/AIDS sensitive data gathering systems.The data are captured at month-end in the school and sent to the district office for inclusion in an ACCESS database.The results of this project are presented here.

    The Conference on HIV/AIDS and the education sector - the Education Coalition against HIV/AIDS- was held from 31 May to 1 June 2002.     This is a brief compilation of the impact of HIV and AIDS on Education in Swaziland, Ethiopia, Malawi, Kenya, South Africa, Bostwana, Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Questions on the economic, social, cultural and health context within the education system are answered and an overview of negative and positive impacts of HIV on the education sector, curriculum changes, skills-based education and community involvement discussed.

    This is a workshop report on Commonwealth universities and the HIV/AIDS pandemic held in Durban, South Africa.   11. HIV/AIDS in Education Workshop: Convened and facilitated HEARD

    The Workshop was funded by USAID and was convened, organised and chaired by the Health Economics and HIV/AIDS Research Division of the University of Natal (HEARD). The main objective of the workshop was to develop an understanding of the impact of the pandemic on education and the economy, and begin to provide management guidelines and frameworks to assist in dealing with the functional realities of administration and planning in a dramatically changing situation.
