  8. Training teachers in an HIV and AIDS context: experiences from Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Zambia

    This synthesis report summarizes main findings from case studies in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Zambia that examined the response of teacher training colleges to HIV and AIDS. The findings show that the epidemic is adversely affecting faculty, staff and the functioning of teacher training colleges and that little is being done to address these issues. A number of reasons for this include: absence of any institutional policy framework on HIV and AIDS; limited institutional resource mobilization; and the stigma surrounding the disease. …

    Enrolment is the single most important statistic in education, given its impact on every other element of supply and demand.   14. The impact of HIV/AIDS on education in Botswana

    Since independence, Botswana has made great strides in economic and human development. In education, almost 100% of children now enrol in primary school, over 90% start secondary school and girls have enrollment rates similar to those of boys. However, Botswana's HIV epidemic is one of the world's most severe. The 2000 national antenatal survey of pregnant women found that 38.5% were HIV-positive and it is estimated that around one third of the adult population is infected. This presents a major challenge to further development and improvement in the accessibility and quality of education. …

  15. The Impact of HIV/AIDS on the University of the Western Cape

    The growing HIV/AIDS pandemic has already has a marked impact on higher education and will continue to do so as the disease intensifies. Higher education institutions have a crucial role to play in developing effective mechanisms to deal with this impact both within the academy and in society. The study forms part of eight case studies of how HIV/AIDS affects some individual universities in Africa. The case studies aim to determine the impact on the university and identify responses of staff students and management that will develope effective policies to combat the epidemic.
