    Background: The need to develop capacity for health services and systems research (HSSR) in low and middle income countries has been highlighted in a number of international forums. However, little is known about the level of HSSR training in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). We conducted an assessment at four major East and Southern African universities to describe: a) the numbers of HSSR PhD trainees at these institutions, b) existing HSSR curricula and mode of delivery, and c) motivating and challenging factors for PhD training, from the trainees’ experience. …

  4. Mapping HIV services and policies for adolescents: A survey of ten countries in sub-Saharan Africa

    PEPFAR and USAID, in collaboration with UNICEF, supported AIDSTAR-One in conducting a mapping activity to identify HIV policies and services for adolescents in 10 sub-Saharan African countries: Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.   5. Outcomes of three different models for sex education and citizenship programs concerning knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of Brazilian adolescents

    This cross-sectional study describes three approaches to sex education in schools in three locations-- Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, and Salvador, all in Brazil. It compares knowledge, attitudes and practices related to sexuality, citizenship and gender among adolescents in schools with such programs, compared to controls in schools without them. Results show that the program in Salvador improved knowledge on sexuality and reproductive physiology, attitudes towards citizenship, and use of modern contraceptives compared to controls. …
