    This paper examines how policies and strategies to address school-related gender-based violence have evolved since 2000, when gender-based violence within education was largely invisible. It traces remarkable progress in research, policy and programmes, particularly since the mid-2000s when evidence around the globe exposed high levels of many forms of violence.     This document is an executive summary of the synthesis report on HIV/AIDS and education in Eastern and Southern Africa, prepared for the African Development Forum in 2000. The report examines the way HIV/AIDS has impacted on the education sector in Eastern and Southern Africa, it also examines the adjustments the sector has made to the epidemic and the steps it has taken to slow down its transmission.

  3. HIV/AIDS orphans in homes/orphanages and the community. Are we missing something? A situational/special needs assessment

    The study sought to unearth the special needs of HIV/AIDS orphans in orphanages and homes with emphasis on education, food, shelter, clothing and affection and guidance and counselling needs. It also tried to make recommendations on how these needs could be met. It was carried out orphanages mainly in the Manya Krobo, and New Juaben districts in the Eastern Region of Ghana, which are noted for their high death rates resulting from AIDS. The sample consisted of 77 children aged between 6 to 15 years from the two districts (23 from Manya Krobo and 54 from New Juaben) and their caregivers. …

    As part of a two-country study (with Namibia), TAMASHA was contracted by UNESCO to carry out research into the needs of children in school living with HIV and the extent to which their rights and needs were being fulfilled. This research was carried out by interviewing national policy-makers and officials, as well as district officials in Njombe District. Children living with HIV and others affected by AIDS were also interviewed, together with their parents, guardians and teachers, and organizations working with them in Dar-es-Salaam and Njombe District in Iringa Region. …

    As part of a two-country study (with Tanzania), RAISON was contracted by UNESCO to carry out research into the needs of children in school living with HIV and the extent to which their rights and needs were being fulfilled.   10. Educational access and HIV prevention: Making the case for education as a health priority in sub-Saharan Africa

    There is much evidence showing an association between sexual behavior and both attendance and attainment. Experimental evidence that school attendance leads to safer sexual behavior is currently under review. Studies suggest several pathways through which sexual behavior, and consequently the risk of HIV infection, may be influenced by schooling. Students attending school have a smaller sexual network and a stronger motivation to avoid the consequences of unprotected sex - both pregnancy and HIV infection - than their out-of-school peers.

    This study assessed the policies, strategic plans and structures that have been put in place inZimbabwe to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the education sector. It also examined the comprehensiveness of projects and programmes currently being implemented by the government in collaboration with partner organisations and NGOs.     Despite the magnitude and dire consequences of the growing number of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in South Africa, and elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa, there is insufficient documentation of the strategies deployed to improve the well-being of these children.   15. HIV/AIDS and girls' education. The FAWE Kenya Experience

    This paper tells about an experience in Kenyan primary schools. A training workshop was organized for 64 teachers, two each from the 32 targeted primary schools. The two teachers subsequently served as patrons of the peer counselling clubs in their schools and provide guidance and counselling services. Through a highly participatory workshop, the teachers were equipped with knowledge, skills and attitudes in HIV/AIDS counselling and were presented with a lot of resource material for use in their schools. …
