  1. Parents' perceptions of HIV counselling and testing in schools: ethical, legal and social implications

    In view of the high prevalence of HIV and AIDS in South Africa, particularly among adolescents, the Departments of Health and Education have proposed a school-based HIV counselling and testing (HCT) campaign to reduce HIV infections and sexual risk behaviour. Through the use of semi-structured interviews, our qualitative study explored perceptions of parents regarding the ethico-legal and social implications of the proposed campaign.   10. A monitoring and evaluation report of the media coverage of HIV/AIDS Eastern Africa in the year 2002 with a special emphasis on stigma and discrimination

    This content analysis, which was carried out over a twelve month period spanning January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2002 examines the manner in which the print and online media in the 13 countries report on HIV/AIDS. The main focus of the analyses is the treatment of stigmatisation and discrimination and whether writers adhere to journalistic ethics in their write-ups. It also covers the gender aspect in the coverage of HIV/AIDS and language use in the write-ups.

    This document is a compilation of papers presented at a international seminar. The seminar examined issues of HIV/AIDS from a social sciences perspective. The themes discussed are organized into two volumes. The first volume covers: 1) the epidemic and its social, cultural and political implications; 2) models and projections with regard to HIV/AIDS and ideological methods and challenges; and 3) social practices, living conditions, and vulnerability. The second volume deals with issues of responsibility for AIDS --- actors, institutions, etc. and scientific and ethnical concerns. Papers presented at roundtables organized during the seminar are also contained in this volume. These cover such topics as: AIDS in extreme situations; assuming responsibility for, and associating with persons living with HIV/AIDS, institutional and non-institutional actors in the control of AIDS.

  14. African network on ethics, law and HIV. Proceedings of the intercountry consultation, Dakar, Senegal, 27 June - 1 July 1994

    This volume is derived from a consultation on ethics, law and HIV/AIDS that was convened in Dakar, Senegal, in 1994. It is divided into 4 parts. The first part deals with ethical and legal issues relating to the HIV/AIDS epidemic drawing upon experiences in the different countries. The second part consists of thematic papers prepared by experts which serve as an introduction to the discussions on a number of key issues including: ethical principles and practice in response to the HIV epidemic; HIV/AIDS, public health and individual rights and confidentiality; HIV/AIDS and law. In the third part, three subjects are treated: 1)the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Rwanda tragedy, 2)religious values in the context of the epidemic; and 3)community response to the epidemic. The last section reports on working groups findings pertaining to strategies for the establishment of an African Network on Ethics, Law and HIV.
