  1. Adolescent sexual and reproductive health: scoping the impact of programming in low- and middle-income countries

Adolescence (10-19 years old) is a critical period in life, during which people undergo extensive biological, psychological and social changes. During this time, sexual and reproductive health can pose serious challenges for adolescents and programming needs to be effective in addressing this important health area. This scoping paper assesses the state of evidence around adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH), exploring the supply of and demand for evidence on the impact of ASRH programming in low- and middle-income countries. …

  2. Adolescent sexual and reproductive health: an evidence gap map

This report presents the findings of an evidence gap map that assesses the evidence available on the effects of adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) programming in low- and middle-income countries. It documents the methods used to create the map and examines evidence clusters and gaps identified in it. While there is considerable amount of impact evaluation evidence, it addresses only some of the priority questions within this broad topic. The greatest prevalence of evidence is on sexual health education and other instruction within and outside of the classroom. …

  3. Healthy, happy, safe: an investigation into how PSHE and SRE are inspected in English schools

This report analyses over 2000 primary and secondary school inspection reports for 2015/16. The report’s main findings are as follows: -SRE was mentioned by inspectors in less than 1% of reports and PSHE in just 14% of reports, fewer than almost all other established subjects, including history (36%), geography (26%), music (31%), and art (31%). -Mentions of sexual health, safe sex, and related topics were almost entirely absent from inspectors’ reports, with only 1% of reports referring to these issues. …

  5. Key Issues in Sex Education: reflecting on teaching, learning and assessment

Drawing upon critical reflections of staff and student experiences of teaching, learning and assessment on an undergraduate module entitled Key Issues in Sex Education, we discuss the strategies used to engage students in debates around sex and relationships education (SRE). To date, there is little research which evaluates how formal assessments can be made relevant to students' exploration of this subject. …

  6. What does not work in adolescent sexual and reproductive health: a review of evidence on interventions commonly accepted as best practices

Youth centers, peer education, and one-off public meetings have generally been ineffective in facilitating young people's access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, changing their behaviors, or influencing social norms around adolescent SRH. Approaches that have been found to be effective when well implemented, such as comprehensive sexuality education and youth-friendly services, have tended to flounder as they have considerable implementation requirements that are seldom met. …

  7. Sex and relationships education in further education settings: Investigating training and resources

This report sets out findings of a research study designed to establish current levels of sex and relationships education (SRE) provision in further education (FE) and sixth form colleges. …

  8. Community-level successes and challenges to implementing adolescent sex education programs

Best practices for adolescent sex education recommend science-based approaches. However, little is known about the capacity and needs of organizations who implement sex education programs on the local level. The purpose of this research was to describe successes and challenges of community organizations in implementing science-based sex education. Using qualitative methods, we interviewed program directors and educators in 17 state funded adolescent pregnancy prevention/sex education programs as part of a larger mixed methods evaluation. …

  9. Assessment of Curriculum Response in 35 countries for the EFA Monitoring Report 2005 "The Quality Imperative"

This study does not address the level of implementation of HIV/AIDS education, but the framework and conditions set in policies and curricula for curriculum implementation. This analysis will however lead to an evaluation of the likely quality of implementation that may be expected, regarding criteria established through existing research and evaluation. From the analysis of the curriculum, which states goals, intention and, what can be expected to be actually implemented as HIV/AIDS education in schools and class rooms. …

  10. Impact of sex and HIV education programs on sexual behaviors of youth in developing and developed countries

Sex and HIV education programs that are based on a written curriculum and that are implemented among groups of youth in school, clinic, or community settings are a promising type of intervention to reduce adolescent sexual risk behaviors. This paper summarizes a review of 83 evaluations of such programs in developing and developed countries. The programs typically focused on pregnancy or HIV/STI prevention behaviors, not on broader issues of sexuality such as developmental stages, gender roles, or romantic relationships. …
