  5. A Review of Socio-Economic Empowerment Initiatives for Women Living with HIV in Asia

    This review of socio-economic empowerment initiatives for women living with HIV in Asia complements the assessment of the Women and Wealth Project (WWP), supported by the United Nations Development Programme Asia-Pacific Regional Centre and implemented by the Population and Community Development Association of Thailand. The purpose of this review is to compare the approach used in the WWP with those employed in other ten similar initiatives in Cambodia, China, India, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam and make recommendations based upon the findings of the WWP assessment and the review.

    This impact assessment study aims to examine coverage of harm reduction interventions in Vietnam among injecting drug users and female sex workers from 2004-2009 and to understand the HIV transmission dynamics in Vietnam and to estimate the extent to which harm reduction interventions among core groups have contributed towards epidemiological trends and reduced HIV transmission in Vietnam during the 2004-2009 strategy.

    This report focuses on the experiences of Save the Children in monitoring, implementing and reviewing NPAs in Angola, Ethiopia, South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique, Uganda and Zimbabwe.   13. Prognosis of patients with HIV-1 infection starting antiretroviral therapy in sub-Saharan Africa: a collaborative analysis of scale-up programmes

    Prognostic models have been developed for patients infected with HIV-1 who start combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) in high-income countries, but not for patients in sub-Saharan Africa. The article shows the development of two prognostic models to estimate the probability of death in patients starting ART in sub-Saharan Africa. Data for adult patients who started ART in four scale-up programmes in Côte d'Ivoire, South Africa, and Malawi from 2004 to 2007 are analised. Patients lost to follow-up in the first year were excluded. …

    The toolkit aims to assist education sector staff, networks of people living with HIV, and others to apply the principles for the greater involvement of people living with or affected by HIV and AIDS (GIPA) in a comprehensive approach for the education sector's response to HIV and AIDS. The toolkit includes 10 activities, each requiring from 1 to 3 hours, which can be modified as needed. The activities introduce the basics of HIV and AIDS, the concept of GIPA, and ways its principles can be incorporated into a comprehensive approach for the education sector's HIV and AIDS initiatives. …
