The overall purpose of the research was to evaluate My Future is My Choice (MFMC), a national peer education HIV prevention life skills programme in Namibia, and to provide recommendations for programme improvement and strengthening. An official extra-curricular life skills program of the Ministry of Education at secondary and combined schools, the MFMC programme seeks to protect young people from HIV infection and sexually transmitted diseases as well as prevent unintended pregnancies.
Although not part of the national curriculum until 2004, HIV/AIDS education has been taught for some time in Ugandan secondary schools through a variety of extracurricular means, including the media, youth groups, drama, music, and Parent Teacher Associations. Over the past 15 years, girls' education in the developing world has been a story of progress. Interest and financial backing from the development community have grown steadily in response to accumulating evidence documenting the many benefits of girls' schooling, and female education is now a major part of global development commitments, including the Millennium Development Goals.The information collected for this report suggest that relatively few programs are specifically designed with the developmental and learning needs of adolescent girls in mind. …
The HIV and AIDS School Club Initiative (HASCI) is a pilot component of the Malawi Teacher Training Activity (MTTA) project, supported through USAID/Malawi PEPFAR funds. The initiative aims at enhancing USAID/Malawi's education support, by promoting a school-based anti-AIDS campaign, focusing particularly on school-community and intergenerational dialogue about important issues regarding the prevention of HIV and AIDS, with a special focus on abstinence and being faithful. …
This chapter describes school programmes addressing HIV/AIDS in Malawi, Zambia, Kenya and Uganda. It describes the common approaches to anti AIDS programmes adopted in these countries mostly in the form of school based curriculum or club activities organized through the school or community.
As a result of the Johannesburg Biennial Meeting and the Prospective Stock-Taking Review, ADEA invited the African ministries of education to analyze the different interventions they have implemented to control HIV and manage its impact on the sector. The broad objective is then to compile these case studies to identify promising practices, and subsequently share this information with other ministries. This particular study lists country initiatives and explores the interventions already in place to estimate their effectiveness and begin to collect lessons learned.
