La Sesión Extraordinaria de la Asamblea General de la ONU (UNGASS, por sus siglas en inglés) sobre VIH/SIDA, realizada en junio de 2001, reconoció en su Declaración de Compromiso la necesidad de fortalecer la participación de las organizaciones de inspiración religiosa. Las partes deben perseguir los objetivos y las áreas de cooperación definidos en este Memorandum de Acuerdo desde sus propias perspectivas.
