  2. Opportunities for technology-based HIV prevention programming among high school students in Cape Town, South Africa

    One in three new cases of HIV in South Africa is among adolescents. Given that adolescents are particularly affected, scalable, and cost-effective prevention programs are urgently needed. This study aims to identify opportunities to integrate technology into youth HIV prevention efforts. In 2012, 1107 8th–11th graders completed a paper-and-pencil survey. Respondents were enrolled in one of three public high schools in Langa, a lower income community in Cape Town, South Africa.   3. Application of the information, motivation and behavioural skills model for targeting HIV risk behaviour amongst adolescent learners in South Africa

    This paper discusses the application of an information, motivation and behavioural skills (IMB) model in a school-based programme for the reduction of HIV risk behaviour among 259 Grade 11 learners in two high schools in Alexandra township, Johannesburg. School 1 was the Experimental group, while School 2 was the Control group. After a baseline study (Time 1) at both schools, a 3-week intervention programme was conducted at School 1. A post-test (Time 2) was conducted at both schools. The intervention was repeated at School 2, followed by another post-test (Time 3) at both schools. …

    Sex education is the cornerstone on which most HIV/AIDS prevention programmes rest and since the adoption of Outcomes-Based Education (OBE), has become a compulsory part of the South African school curriculum through the Life Orientation learning area.   5. What Tanzanian young people want to know about sexual health; implications for school-based sex and relationships education

    It is very important that sex and relationships education (SRE) programme developers attempt to elicit, understand and incorporate young people's views in the SRE development and implementation processes. This paper reports the findings of a study that sought to identify young people's self-identified learning needs and priorities regarding sexual health that should be included in school-based SRE.   6. Condom Use Increases Among Namibian Youths Following HIV Training

    Namibian adolescents who received an HIV training curriculum experienced significant changes in attitudes, knowledge, intentions and behaviors concerning sexual activity and HIV. Adolescents who received training were more likely than their peers to know how pregnancy occurs and how to use a condom correctly. They also were more likely to believe that they could be intimate with a partner without having sex and that they could have a girlfriend or boyfriend for a long time without having sex. …

    The USAID-funded Support for Orphans and Vulnerable Children affected by HIV/AIDS project (referred to as Kenya OVC Track I from here onwards) was a six-month follow-on award to the five-year Breaking Barriers Project, implemented in Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia, that ended in September 2010.   8. AIDS and Democratic Education in Uganda

    Education is critical in curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS. An AIDS education study in Uganda found that the curriculum was characterized by denial of knowledge, marginalization of youth (especially girls), and lack of ability to change or improve content. Democratic education is needed. Three approaches are proposed to improve AIDS education: student participation in curriculum formulation, students setting the agenda for delivery of AIDS education, and individual student choice of what to learn and how.

  11. The Straight Talk Campaign in Uganda: Impact of Mass Media Initiatives

    This report presents the findings of an evaluation of the Straight Talk (ST) mass media communication programs, which have been implemented in Uganda since 1993. The mass media programs largely comprise three main materials: multilingual Straight Talk Radio Shows, multilingual Straight Talk newspapers, and an English language Young Talk newspaper. Straight Talk also implements a wide array of school-based activities to engender a youth-friendly school environment. …

    This case study focuses on Zambia's Lusaka and Southern Provinces and the views of teachers and pupils of that region with regards to the teaching of HIV/AIDS in basic education. It is limited to the efforts being made by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in Zambia on fighting the spread of the disease among school children and teachers.
