    Sexuality is part and parcel of students' experiences of schooling manifested in personal friendships, relations and social interaction. These encounters constitute sites within which sexual identities are developed, practiced and actively produced through processes of negotiation. Drawing on qualitative research conducted in 14 selected secondary schools in Central and Western Uganda, the study illuminates gendered sexual vulnerability within patterns of social interaction and young girls gendered experiences and negotiation of their sexuality. …

  4. Delaying sexual debut amongst out-of-school youth in rural southwest Uganda

    This paper focuses on sexual debut among out-of-school youth in Masaka District, Uganda; factors influencing its timing; and assistance young people feel they need to delay sexual initiation. Data were drawn from a needs assessment using applied anthropological techniques with young people ages 13-19 years. Parents, guardians, and community leaders were also consulted. All participants felt that young people begin their sexual lives too early. Young men feel under pressure from friends and older men to prove their masculinity. …

  6. Gender and risk of HIV in Ghana and Uganda

    Using Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data for Ghana and Uganda, this study examines the gender differentials in perceptions of HIV risk in the two countries, which have been hit by the HIV epidemic in a different way, as in Ghana the epidemic has just started. It identifies factors associated with high or low risk of HIV infection by using logistic regression methodology. Principal findings include strong gender differentials in perceptions of risk, especially in Uganda; women felt at greater risk of HIV infection than men. …

    This paper provides results from qualitative research in Uganda which highlights the inherent contradiction of trying to promote adolescent sexual health with its messages of equality in partnerships when the school culture clearly promotes male domination and leadership. Offers practical suggestions for MoE to address inequality in schools and to advance democratic learning.
