  1. Adolescent Girls Empowerment Program (AGEP): sexual and gender-based violence; brief, March 2018

Acceptability and experience of sexual and gender-based violence is alarmingly high among adolescent girls in Zambia. Even more striking is the very young age from which notions of violence are ingrained and experience with violence begins. This brief summarizes the Adolescent Girls Empowerment Program (AGEP) evaluation which demonstrated that in the Zambian context, a program focused on changing norms among girls themselves is not enough to impact attitudes toward and experience of violence. …

  2. Coming of age in the classroom: religious and cultural barriers to comprehensive sexuality education

This paper elucidates evidence which underscores anxieties and panic about sexuality and sexual behaviour of young people influenced by movements advancing a distinct religious identity, and the implications for advocacy on advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). Synthesised in this document is evidence from two countries - Bangladesh and India - on Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE), an area of controversy (to varying degree) in both countries. Evidence from each country stem from national studies on the influence of religion on CSE, and are qualitative in nature. …

  5. A multi-sectoral approach to providing reproductive health and information services to young people in Western Kenya: Kenya Adolescent Reproductive Health Project

Informing adolescents about appropriate and acceptable behaviours, and ways to protect themselves against unwanted and unprotected sex, has proved problematic in Kenya. Education programmes for in and out of school adolescents are lacking, there is controversy around providing services to sexually active adolescents, and a pervasive concern that sexuality education and contraceptive services leads to promiscuity. …

  6. Sexual risk among orphaned adolescents: is country-level HIV prevalence an important factor?

Previous studies from sub-Saharan Africa have found that orphans experience increased sexual risk compared to non-orphans. This article developed a theoretical framework for the investigation of determinants of HIV risk and used it to generate specific hypotheses regarding the effect of country-level HIV prevalence on the sexual risk experience of orphans. It expected that countries with high HIV prevalence would experience a higher prevalence of orphanhood. …
