  2. Public expenditure review, 2011 HIV and AIDS Tanzania Mainland

    The main objective of the HIV and AIDS Public Expenditure Review (PER) 2011 is to assess expenditures on HIV and AIDS activities by the public and private sectors in Tanzania. This includes an identification of gaps and recommendations on measures for ensuring a more effective contribution to the National Multisectoral Strategic Framework 2008–2012 (NMSF) and ways to enhance and explore public and private sector contributions to the HIV and AIDS response.

  3. Review of national AIDS councils in Africa: Findings from five countries

    National AIDS councils (NACs) were established in many African countries to co-ordinate the multi-sectoral response to HIV/ AIDS. Their main mandate is to provide strategic leadership and co-ordinate activities geared to fight against HIV/AIDS. This study sought to understand the extent to which NACs have achieved their goals and the challenges they face. Best practices were identified and shared among countries involved, so as to enhance their efforts. This review is crucial given that the fight against HIV/AIDS is far from being won. …

    In 2005, an estimated 48 million children aged 0-18 years, that is to say 12 percent of all children in sub-Saharan Africa, were orphans, and that number is expected to rise to 53 million by 2010. One quarter of all orphans are orphaned because of AIDS, and about 2.6 million children are currently infected with HIV.
