  1. Health and family life education curriculum guides

    Health and Family Life Education (HFLE) was introduced into the curriculum of Primary Schools in 1998. The programme in schools was guided by the Health and Family Life Education Scope and Sequence for Grades 1-6, published in June, 1998. The programme achieved important successes. However, it has been argued that, given the challenges that children face in their daily lives, a more definitive “life skills” focus is required to help students manage the situations they encounter.     This research brief describes two evidence-generation efforts undertaken by the Evidence to Action Project (E2A), of which IntraHealth is a partner, and Kenyatta University, along with support from Pathfinder International, Kenya, from 2015-2016. The first evidence-generation effort involved an assessment of select KU service delivery statistics, and the second was a qualitative research study on the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs, attitudes, preferences, and behaviors of KU students. …

  3. The effectiveness of HIV/AIDS school-based sexual health education programmes in Nigeria: a systematic review

    HIV/AIDS is one of the most important public health challenges facing Nigeria today. Recent evidence has revealed that the adolescent population make up a large proportion of the 3.7% reported prevalence rate among Nigerians aged 15–49 years. School-based sexual health education has therefore become an important tool towards fighting this problem. This systematic review assesses the efficacy of these educational programmes and examines how future programmes and their evaluations can improve. …

  7. Relationships and sexuality education (RSE) in the context of social, personal and health education (SPHE): an assessment of the challenges to full implementation of the programme in post-primary schools

    The study examined the implementation of Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) in Irish postprimary schools. This research is the most comprehensive study of relationships and sexuality education conducted in Ireland to date. This study sought to capture the factors that have helped and hindered the implementation of RSE since the programme was first introduced to post-primary schools in 1995. The findings of this study are vital to informing future educational policy with regard to the teaching and resourcing of RSE in second-level schools. …

  8. The potential of comprehensive sex education in China: findings from Suburban Shanghai

    This study examines the impact of a comprehensive sex education program carried out in a Shanghai suburb with unmarried 15-24 year-olds over a period of 20 months. Though participation in the intervention was not associated with delayed sexual initiation, it was associated with increased odds of contraceptive use and condom use, and with decreased odds of sexual coercion during the intervention period. Additionally, the proportion of youth reporting pregnancy involvement during the intervention period was significantly lower in the intervention group than among controls.

  10. What's in a game? : an evaluation of two sexuality education board games : Safari of life and young man's journey

    PATH developed two sexuality education board games, Safari of Life (SOL) and its spin-off Young Man's Journey (YMJ) that are designed to promote reproductive health through increased communication on relevant issues, provision of information, and strengthened relevant thinking and social skills. This publication includes findings of an evaluation these games after fifteen months of their uses in eleven countries. Qualitative methods were used to assess the games' ability to fulfill their objectives of improved communication, knowledge and skills.

  13. Reaching young men and boys

    This article highlights the needs of adolescent males as they go through a critical process of forming self-identity. A variety of educational approaches, community-based, school-based and peer education are described so as to inform young men about STDs and HIV/AIDS. Innovative strategies including social marketing, hotlines and radio call-in programmes; the internet and CD-ROMs and entertainment-education programmes that provide adolescent males the confidential, timely and anonymous counselling they tend to prefer are discussed. …
