  1. Situational analysis on the status of the sexual and reproductive health of students in tertiary institutions in the SADC region

    It is a hardy perennial of the university environment that normative consensus around large global issues such as sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) is easier to secure than the programmatic requisites. Thus, in principle, tertiary education students are included in international SRHR-related declarations and domestic policies pertaining to the education and health sectors; in practice, there is often a lack of programmatic and policy attention at institutional level, as well as a marked knowledge gap over the status of student’s sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs.

    This study, commissioned by the Association of African Universities, was conducted to identify the strengths, constraints and opportunities for addressing the human resource and policy challenges occassioned by the HIV and AIDS pandemic. A sample of between 12 and 15 institutions which exemplified best practices in the response to HIV and AIDS in Africa was identified.     The handbook is comprised of eight interrelated yet separate booklets, each addresses a particular evaluation need. These booklets address evaluation of HIV policy, HIV curricula, HIV staff development programmes, and HIV-related student outcomes. They can be of use to help assess the equality of HIV education programmes at the state and local levels.

  11. Adolescents data on reproductive health issues in the I. R. of Iran

    The paper presents the results of a baseline survey conducted to assess the knowledge and awareness of reproductive health matters among the students of the junior and high schools. The survey was conducted by the Statistical Centre of Iran with the collaboration of UNFPA-Iran in the selected project areas. Survey information will facilitate the monitoring and evaluation of the current programme of the Ministry of Education and help formulate the future plan of action.

    The newsletter recounts the efforts of the West Bengal Voluntary and Health Association (WBVHA) in adolescents' problems. WBVHA is a leading health promoting agency mainly concerned with the basic health of common people. It works to prevent HIV, AIDS, malaria and promoters for caring adolescence health and taking unique steps. WBVHA has already been working with many schools in Kolkata and four districts in West Bengal.
