  6. The impact of HIV/ AIDS on the education system in Namibia

    This Country paper on HIV/AIDS and Education in Namibia was presented at IIEP workshop organized in September 2000 in Paris. It describes the current status and recent trends in the Namibian education sector and provides an overview of future directions and requirements, presenting programmes on HIV/AIDS in the country and their objectives. The role of education in addressing issues of HIV/AIDS is outlined, with a particular mission of the HIV/AIDS Committee and its five years plan (2001-2006). Finally, the training needs of the Ministry of Basic Education, Sports and Culture are identified.

    The IIEP HIV/AIDS Forum was conceived with two themes in mind - of information sharing and of community building.     The overall goal of Stay Healthy: A Gender-Transformative HIV Prevention Curriculum for Youth in Namibia is to prevent HIV infection among Namibian youth aged 13-18.   12. A Multi-level Model of Sexual Behavior among Young people in Nyanza, Kenya

    Using data collected from 3645 sexually active grade 6 and 7 students from 160 schools and applying hierarchical linear models, this study estimates the impact of individual, school and community level variables on condom use among sexually experienced young people in Nyanza, Kenya. Based on the findings, the document recommends that AIDS prevention interventions take account not only of individual-level factors, but also school and community influences on the sexual behaviours of youth.
