This document describes the mission, principles, components and objectives of the University of Natal AIDS Plan for 2002-2004. It is a departure point for dialogue and action with the various stakeholders, collaborators and partners committed to enhancing the response to HIV/AIDS within the University community. This dialogue will enable us to build, develop and implement this plan, thereby reducing the impact of HIV/AIDS on the University of Natal.
The UDSM HIV/AIDS Policy aims at preventing the spread of HIV infection, providing equal access to treatment, care and support services to people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, generating and disseminating HIV/AIDS knowledge, and providing a strong and committed leadership in response to the pandemic at the UDSM and the wider society.
The objectives of the policy are:To ensure that there is a consistent and sustainable programme of information and education on HIV/AIDS within the Polytechnic communityTo encourage attitudinal and behaviour changeTo encourage voluntary counselling and testing among staff and studentsTo collaborate with other stakeholders in the fight against HIV/AIDSTo reduce stigmatisation and discriminationTo ensure that the basic human rights of persons infected with HIV/AIDS are protected and upheld
