    The iCAN package aims to help address the challenges facing adolescents and young people living in the East and Southern Africa (ESA) region. It has been designed to support young people living with HIV (YPLHIV) and those who work with them, to help them understand their HIV positive status and empower them to plan their lives in ways that protect both their own health and that of others. The package can be used to complement existing materials focusing on sexual and reproductive health and HIV, and other youth-focused packages produced by partners working with YPLHIV. …

  2. HIV and sexual and reproductive health programming: innovative approaches to integrated service delivery

    This compendium has profiled and analysed 11 case studies on integrated service delivery in the context of EMTCT from 9 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. All of the examples demonstrate a general trend towards the implementation of integrated service delivery models supported by policy frameworks adopted in country and by service organizations at the facility level. These promising practices are by no means exhaustive or geographically representative. They do, however, contain valuable and practical vignettes of integrated service delivery in countries with generalized HIV epidemics. …

  3. Regional accountability framework: ministerial commitment on comprehensive sexuality education and sexual and reproductive health services for adolescents and young people in Eastern and Southern African (ESA)

    The accountability frame work has been developed as a tool to monitor country and regional progress towards the agreed commitments as set out in the ESA Ministerial commitment document. The technical coordinating Group, under the leadership of UNAIDS and with support from SADC and EAC Secretariats will play a key role in the development and implementation of the accountability mechanism. The intended audience for the framework are primarily governments in the 20 countries, civil society partners (including young people and community based organisations) and development partners.

  6. Achieving an AIDS-free generation for gay men and other MSM in Southern Africa

    Focused specifically on six countries in southern Africa, this report describes the financing and implementation of programs for gay men, other men who have sex with men, and transgender individuals (GMT) in a region at the heart of the HIV epidemic through a combination of desk research and in-country consultations conducted by civil society advocates with implementers, policy makers, academics, and people living with HIV.

  8. Prognosis of patients with HIV-1 infection starting antiretroviral therapy in sub-Saharan Africa: a collaborative analysis of scale-up programmes

    Prognostic models have been developed for patients infected with HIV-1 who start combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) in high-income countries, but not for patients in sub-Saharan Africa. The article shows the development of two prognostic models to estimate the probability of death in patients starting ART in sub-Saharan Africa. Data for adult patients who started ART in four scale-up programmes in Côte d'Ivoire, South Africa, and Malawi from 2004 to 2007 are analised. Patients lost to follow-up in the first year were excluded. …

  10. Economic Inequality and HIV in Malawi

    The relationship between economic inequality and HIV infection among young Malawian women is estimated with multi-level logit models of the individual probability of being infected. Two community levels are considered: the immediate neighbourhood, and Malawi's districts. We find a strong positive association between communal inequality and the risk of HIV infection. The relationship between economic status and HIV status, at communal and individual levels, is less clear-cut, but individual absolute poverty does not increase the risk of HIV infection. …
