The main objective of this situational assessment is to compile and synthesize existing recent information on HIV and young people together with the current AIDS response for young people in Zambia, including programmes, policies, and key partners, and to document gaps and challenges in the response. In this document young people refers to individuals aged 10 to 24 years. It analyzes existing strategic information on HIV and young people and identifies gaps in the evidence and in the current HIV response.
The 10 essays in this volume look at the many and complex relationships between HIV/AIDS and education. It is clear that education in an AIDS-affected world cannot be the same as that in an AIDS-free world. Analyses and responses to the HIV epidemic remain rooted in a mind set which while it was relevant 5 or more years ago may no longer be so. Or at least what is written, said, thought and done about the development implications of the HIV epidemic are no longer sufficient. There is still a lack of clarity about the ways in which development affects the course of the HIV epidemic, such as the role of poverty in transmission of the virus and how families cope with the poverty caused by illness and death. …
