  1. Menstruation and menstrual hygiene management in selected KwaZulu-Natal schools

    The focus of this study was on the impact of menstruation and menstrual hygiene management on girl learners in schools in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Issues related to cultural practices, teachings about menstruation, access to sanitary supplies necessary during menstruation and to sanitation, as well as psychological trauma, particularly at menarche (the time of their first menstruation), were looked at. The study also attempted to capture the feelings and experiences of learners and their knowledge at menarche.

  4. Gender equality assessment of provincial HIV, STIs and TB strategic and operational plans in South Africa

    This Gender Equality Assessment of Provincial Strategic Plans and Provincial Operational Plans on HIV, STIs and TB within South Africa assesses provincial HIV, STI and TB responses against the HEARD and ATHENA Framework for Women, Girls and Gender Equality and the UNAIDS Gender Assessment Tool for National HIV Responses. The Assessment identifies the extent to which provincial responses prioritise women, girls and gender equality by including a number of specific, evidence-informed interventions; it furthermore highlights policy and programmatic gaps and challenges within these plans. …

  7. Financing the South African national strategic plan for HIV, STIs and TB 2012-2016. An analysis of funding, funding gaps and financing considerations

    The purpose of this paper is to analyse resource requirements to implement the NSP as well as available sources of funding so as to determine financial gaps and potential strategies to fill those gaps. The analysis was based on a review of relevant costing reports and models prepared recently in South Africa. These reports and models are referred to and referenced in the body of this report. The analysis provides a snap shot of funding needs and gaps for HIV and TB as of mid-way through the 2013/14 financial year as the collection of financial data for this analysis was completed by that date.

  9. Effective laws to end HIV and AIDS: Next steps for parliaments

    With the global AIDS response becoming increasingly hampered by the criminalization of key populations, this study aims to encourage and assist parliamentary scrutiny of legislation that impedes effective HIV interventions. It highlights the various processes in selected parliaments that led to the adoption of laws with a positive impact on the AIDS response. Although such outcomes were not always easy to achieve, they were mainly the result of inspired leadership by parliamentarians able to overcome the moral obstacles that had stifled socially sensitive issues in political debate.

  10. HIV/AIDS and the South African Bill of Rights, with specific reference to the approach and role of the courts

    An outstanding feature of the 1996 South African Constitution is the inclusion of a Bill of Rights, which contains all the categories of human rights that are ordinarily included in most international human rights instruments. Section 27 provides for, among other things, the right to health care services and the right to emergency medical treatment.     This is a report on a study conducted with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) people to explore their sexual and reproductive health and rights experiences and needs. The research exercise involved HIV positive LGBTI people and LGBTI NGOs in the greater Johannesburg area in Gauteng, South Africa. The main objective of the research was to collect data on sexual and reproductive health needs and experiences of LGBTI community, especially among people who are living with HIV.
