  1. Assessment of comprehensive HIV/AIDS knowledge level among in-school adolescents in eastern Ethiopia

    This study tries to assess the level of comprehensive knowledge of HIV/AIDS and the factors associated with it among in-school adolescents in eastern Ethiopia. The reason for this study is that there are more adolescents in school today, in Ethiopia, than ever before. This is a cross-sectional school-based study in which respondents were students attending regular school in 14 high schools located in 14 different districts of eastern Ethiopia. The proportion of in-school adolescents with comprehensive HIV/AIDS knowledge was computed and compared by sex. …

  2. Young people's perspectives on the adoption of preventive measures for HIV/AIDS, malaria and family planning in South-West Uganda: focus group study

    The aim of the study was to explore young people's understanding and knowledge about why protective measures against HIV/AIDS, malaria and unplanned pregnancy are not taken by those at risk in Uganda. The study results were that the participants (all from secondary school in Kanungu Uganda) could identify reasons why preventive action was not taken. These reasons included misconceptions, the inpracticability of abstinence, and fear of side effects of several key interventions. The article argues that there is an apportunity to improve preventive measures by tackling these issues. …

  3. Revue des stratégies de communication lors des séances d'IEC VIH-sida en milieu scolaire et/ou universitaire au Bénin : méthodes, messages, impacts et perspectives

    L'objectif principal de cette recherche est d'étudier et d'analyser l'adaptabilité et les impacts des campagnes ou stratégies de communication des séances d'information, d'éducation et de communication (IEC-VIH-SIDA) en milieu scolaire et/ou universitaire en rapport avec le contexte socioculturel béninois Dans cette optique, l'accent sera surtout mis sur la revue des différentes séances d'IEC en matière de VIH/SIDA effectuées en présentant les stratégies étudiées, les supports utilisés et les messages transmis et en procédant par la suite à une analyse des données recueillies.

  6. Community-based HIV/AIDS education in rural Uganda: which channel is most effective?

    This analysis looks at aáprocess evaluation of four channels of delivery (drama, video, community education and leaflets) used in an Information, Education and Communication (IEC) intervention on HIV/AIDS in rural Uganda. Semi-structured interviews (n=37) and focus groups (n=3) were conducted among field staff. Two questionnaires (n=105 and n=69) and focus groups were conducted with community members. More than 85% of the community had seen at least one drama or video and saw them as relevant and realistic. However, the overall message of the plays was often not well understood. …

  7. Culturally-adapted and audio-technology assisted HIV/AIDS awareness and education program in rural Nigeria: a cohort study

    This prospective, 14-week cohort study sought to identify changes in HIV knowledge using a culturally-adapted, technology assisted educational approach in three rural Nigerian villages. One group of people were given seminar-based education, while another were given a portable, digial audio technology-based educational program, which drew on the rural culture of oral learning. The majority of the participants were Muslim (99%), male (53.3%) and lacked formal education (55%). HIV knowledge was improved by a larger degree in the technology facilitated group than the seminar-based group. …

  8. Does Swaziland have enough Information Education Communication (IEC) material on HIV/AIDS targeting children? Research findings on IEC material available for children in Swaziland

    The aim of this study was to investigate the availability of HIV/AIDS Information Education and Communication (IEC) materials to children. The specific objectives were to: conduct a desktop review of available IEC materials; solicit the knowledge bese of children on HIV/AIDS; determine the available IEC materials and their content; find out what IEC materials are developed and used by various organisations working in HIV/AIDS.

  9. Supporting the educational needs of HIV-positive learners in Tanzania

    As part of a two-country study (with Namibia), TAMASHA was contracted by UNESCO to carry out research into the needs of children in school living with HIV and the extent to which their rights and needs were being fulfilled. This research was carried out by interviewing national policy-makers and officials, as well as district officials in Njombe District. Children living with HIV and others affected by AIDS were also interviewed, together with their parents, guardians and teachers, and organizations working with them in Dar-es-Salaam and Njombe District in Iringa Region. …

  10. Supporting the educational needs of HIV-positive learners in Namibia

    As part of a two-country study (with Tanzania), RAISON was contracted by UNESCO to carry out research into the needs of children in school living with HIV and the extent to which their rights and needs were being fulfilled. Information for this study was derived from 76 respondents in Namibia who contributed to interviews and group discussions in February and March 2008.   11. Training youth caregivers to provide HIV education and support to orphans and vulnerable children in South Africa

    A study conducted in KwaZulu Natal suggests that utilizing trained youth caregivers is a feasible approach for reaching orphans and vulnerable children with HIV prevention education and support. Participants were enthusiastic about the program and demonstrated some improvements in HIV-related knowledge, attitudes, and communication.

    This report documents the findings of a study on the quality and effectiveness of collaboration among partners involved in the HIV and AIDS response in the education sector. The purpose of this study was to document how external partners coordinate and harmonise their efforts at the country level, to identify areas of overlap and significant gaps in country responses, and to formulate recommendations for improving synergy and alignment across IATT member agencies and other actors operating at the country level. …
