  1. Fostering adolescent girl leaders

    At the heart of the Samata intervention is the development of a cadre of adolescent girl leaders who will sustain changes in favour of girls’ education and gender equality in their villages. The programme mentors girls to become confident and vocal young feminists, active in their communities and schools. Samata aims to equip them with the knowledge and skills to effectively negotiate a space that is hostile to women. Overall, the Samata programme has reached 3,600 girls across 69 villages in 2 districts of Bagalkot and Bijapur in northern Karnataka.

  5. India : enhancing grils' life skills recquires long-term commitment

    This study shows that interventions to improve girlsÆ life skills are feasible. However, effecting significant improvements in girlsÆ skills and economic advancement would require a longer-term intervention that nurtures skills while building relationships with parents and communities. It is suggested that the vocational training programs should take a long-term approach to facilitate partnerships with parents and communities in support of adolescent girlsÆ economic participation in India.   6. Do empowered mothers foster gender equity and better reproductive health in the next generation? : a quality analysis from rural Bangladesh

    This policy brief describes qualitative research conducted in three rural Bangladeshi villages between 2001 and 2003. Particular attention was paid to both mothers and mothers-in-law, as women in the study areas tend to live with their mothers-in-law who, therefore, have a strong influence on their daughters' lives. The authors conclude that women "who were relatively empowered seemed to have a greater motivation and capacity" to improve the lives of their daughters and daughters-in-law. …

  8. A survey of teenagers in Nepal for life skills development and HIV/AIDS prevention

    The report summarizes the findings from a survey carried out by the Media Services International (MSI) on behalf of UNICEF Nepal. A total of 1400 teenagers randomly selected from across Nepal's five development regions were interviewed and their answers analyzed.
