    This paper aims to assess whether the goals of the in-school programmes on prevention of HIV and AIDS that are taught in primary schools of 15 national ministries of education in Southern and Eastern Africa have been reached equitably between boys and girls by the end of primary education. One feature of most of these ministries is that they are in countries that are the hardest hit by a general HIV epidemic.     The aim of this study was to investigate the availability of HIV/AIDS Information Education and Communication (IEC) materials to children. The specific objectives were to: conduct a desktop review of available IEC materials; solicit the knowledge bese of children on HIV/AIDS; determine the available IEC materials and their content; find out what IEC materials are developed and used by various organisations working in HIV/AIDS.

    The 15 Ministers of Education associated with the Southern and Eastern Africa Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality (SACMEQ) have been concerned for a number of years about the lack of well-designed objective indicators that can be used to guide an informed debate about the effectiveness of HIV and AIDS prevention education programmes. SACMEQ research teams responded to this concern in 2007 by developing an HIV-AIDS Knowledge Test (known as the HAKT) that was suitable for administration to Grade 6 pupils (aged around 13.5 years on average in SACMEQ countries) and their teachers. …

  5. The AIDS pandemic and institutional governance in an African university: the case of the University of Swaziland

    This paper examines institutional governance with specific reference to how African universities are addressing the challenge of HIV and AIDS. Using the case of the University of Swaziland (UNISWA), the analysis explores how the university is dealing with the AIDS epidemic with respect to governance issues, focusing on AIDS-related activities and policy issues.
