  4. Sexuality education: a ten-country review of school curricula in East and Southern Africa

    This collaborative regional curriculum scan, which was conducted in 2011, seeks to assess the content, quality, and delivery methods of sexuality education curricula in ten ESA countries and aims to ensure that the reviews help countries to develop curricula designed to not only increase comprehensive knowledge among young people, but to empower them to adopt protective behaviours, such as refusing unwanted sex, delaying sex, using condoms and testing for HIV. The ten countries included are Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

  6. Sports for adolescent girls

    Adolescence is a time when gender disparities between boys and girls become more pronounced. While many boys stay focused on school, girls often have more responsibilities at home. These responsibilities limit girls’ opportunities for maintaining social networks, and social isolation can contribute to increasing the risk of dropping out of school, marrying early, and being in situations that leave them vulnerable to pregnancy and HIV infection.   9. Adolescents, social support and help-seeking behavior : an international literature review and program consultation with recommendations for action

    The document is part of WHO project to identify and define evidence-based strategies for influencing adolescent help-seeking and identify research questions and activities to promote improved help-seeking behaviour by adolescents. The document presents the findings from an international review on the topic; results of programme consultation with 35 adolescent health programmes; results of six key informant interviews; and recommendations for action, including brief outline for developing a set of guidelines for the rapid assessment of social supports to promote the help-seeking of adolescents.

  10. Does knowledge equal change? HIV/AIDS education and behaviour change

    This paper sets out to demonstrate that clear links exist between HIV/AIDS education, both inside and outside the education system, and levels of awareness and knowledge about HIV/AIDS and associated risk behaviour. It also examines evidence of consequent behaviour change in relation to such information and linked understanding of the risks posed by HIV/AIDS.
