    The Global Initiative on Primary Prevention of Substance Abuse (Global Initiative) is jointly executed by the United Nations International Drug Control Programme (UNDCP) and the World Health Organization (WHO).   4. Improving sexual behaviors among high-risk youth : encouraging condoms and dual protection

    Working through non-traditional providers, PRIME II built on a successful STI/HIV prevention project in the Philippines to improve contraceptive use among youth engaging in high-risk behaviours. Youth exposed to the intervention were significantly more likely to report using condoms and other contraceptive methods during high-risk behaviours than those who were not exposed.

  6. AIDS Surveillance and Education Project (ASEP), Philippines: reaching sexually exploited children under age 16

    In the Philippines, some 100,000 to 500,000 minors younger than 18 are estimated to be involved in the sex industry. Studies undertaken by PATH (Program for Appropriate Technology in Health) and partner NGOs in urban sex areas show that prostituted children are at high risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV because of low awareness of STIs and HIV, risky sex, drug-injecting practices, and minors' limited access to preventive measures and services at government social hygiene clinics.

  7. Contraceptive practice in Quirino Province, Philippines: experiences of side effects

    The qualitative research study examines the contraceptive practices and understanding of women in Quirino Province, Philippines that have led many women to discontinue use of contraception even though they do not wish to become pregnant. Three factors are examined for their impact on contraceptive use behaviour; occurrence of side effects, spousal relations, and quality of care.
