  2. Public discourse on HIV/AIDS: an archival analysis of national newspaper reporting in Uganda, 1996–2011

    Uganda is recognised as an early success story in the HIV epidemic at least in part due to an open and vigorous national dialogue about HIV prevention. This study examined the national discourse about HIV, AIDS, and young people in New Vision, Uganda's leading national newspaper between 1996 and 2011, building from a previous archival analysis of New Vision reporting by Kirby (1986-1995).   3. Feasibility trial of a film-based educational intervention for increasing boys’ and girls’ intentions to avoid teenage pregnancy: Study protocol

    The World Health Organisation, amongst others, recognises that adolescent men have a vital yet neglected role in reducing teenage pregnancies and that there is a pressing need for educational interventions designed especially for them. This study seeks to fill this gap by determining the feasibility of conducting an effectiveness trial of the If I Were Jack intervention in post-primary schools. This 4-week intervention aims to increase teenagers’ intentions to avoid unintended pregnancy and addresses gender inequalities in sex education by explicitly focusing on young men. …

  4. Scrutinize campaign: a youth HIV prevention campaign addressing multiple and concurrent partnerships

    Launched on South African television in June 2008, the Scrutinize Campaign was a year-long series of HIV prevention ads targeting multiple and concurrent sexual partnerships. Irreverent and humorous, with strong, colorful visuals, the campaign's ads were markedly different from previous South African HIV prevention campaigns for youth. Rather than telling the audience what to do, the Scrutinize campaign messaging encouraged those in the audience to scrutinize their own behavior, resulting in dramatic uptake of key HIV prevention messages.

  7. A journalist's guide to sexual and reproductive health in East Africa

    Sexual and reproductive health encompasses health and well-being in matters related to sexual relations, pregnancies, and births. It deals with the most intimate and private aspects of people's lives, which can be difficult to write about and discuss publicly. As a result, the public misunderstands many sexual and reproductive health matters. In addition, cultural sensitivities and taboos surrounding sexuality often prevent people from seeking information and care and preclude governments from addressing the issues. …

  8. Youth's voices: report on sexual and reproductive rights in Central and Eastern Europe and Balkan countries

    In May 2006, ASTRA-Youth concluded a research done in 11 countries from Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans. In average, 50 young people (between 16 and 30 years old) were interviewed in each country. The research focussed on the knowledge and attitudes of Youth towards Sexual and Reproductive Health issues in their countries. In addition, a cross cultural analysis of the data provided a clear picture of the commonalities and differences in attitudes and needs, giving the opportunity to share best practices and materials amongst participating countries. …

    A new project by National Public Radio, the Kaiser Family Foundation, and Harvard University's Kennedy School examines Americans' views on sex education in the nations public schools. The survey of general public was conducted among a random nationally representative sample of 1759 respondents 18 years of age or older, including an oversample of parents of children in 7th through 12th grade.

    This article presents data on both lifetime and daily exposure to specific mass media sources among Ne pal’s urban youth. It also presents in formation on preferred radio stations and television channels; the role of the mass media in disseminating messages about social and health is sues; the mass media as a source of in formation on contraceptive methods, HIV/AIDS and puberty; and their role as a source of sex education for boys and girls. Finally, it ex amines the factors that influence urban youths’ exposure to the mass media in Nepal.

    The purpose of this study is to examine the nature and extent of messages about sex that are presented in the "Family Hour" on broadcast network television. The study employs scientific content analysis procedures to examine a thorough sample programming from the winter of 1996. It assesses how messages about sexuality in the "Family Hour" have changed over time by comparing the winter 1996 sample to a week of network programmes that were aired in 1976 and 1986. …
