The research found that LGBTIQ people are often represented in the news media inaccurately, stereotypically, or without a clear understanding of SOGIE.   3. HIV and stigma: The media challenge

    Despite the progress being made in the global response to HIV and AIDS, stigma remains a major obstacle to prevention and treatment. It is manifested in many different ways and fear of disgrace prevents people from coming forward for HIV testing and treatment. Key populations – sex workers and their clients, men who have sex with men, the transgender community and people who inject drugs – are particularly affected.   6. Courage and Hope. African teachers living positively with HIV

    122,000 teachers in sub-Saharan Africa are estimated to be living with HIV, most of who do not know their status. Stigma remains their greatest challenge. In 2007, a network of African journalists compiled a book entitled “Courage and Hope” telling the first-hand stories of African teachers who are HIV positive and living healthy, active lives as teachers. This film shows some of the stories those journalists discovered. The teachers went through stigma and discrimination and each used their experience to teach a new generation of teachers, what it means to live positively.

    Stigma has been identified as a complex, diverse and deeply rooted phenomenon that is dynamic in different cultural settings. As a collective social process rather than a mere reflection of an individual's subjective behaviour, it operates by producing and reproducing social structures of power, hierarchy, class and exclusion and by transforming difference (class, race, ethnicity, health status, sexual orientation and gender) into inequality. This document is a literature review about stigma in every sense of the word.
