  3. A measure of commitment: women's sexual and reproductive health risk index for Sub-Saharan Africa

    In 2008 the number of African women who died from pregnancy and child birth was much higher than the number of casualties from all the major conflicts in Africa combined. Maternal mortality continues to be the major cause of death among women of reproductive age (15-49) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This report looks at the performance of sub Saharan African countries in meeting reproductive health targets in 47 countries and ranks them using a set of ten indicators in order of the highest to lowest risk. …

  4. It's Time to Talk About Sex: Sexual Rights are Essential to Achieving the MDGs

    Share-Net recently hosted a meeting encouraging participants to talk about sex. Specifically, it examined the connections between sexual rights and each of the MDGs. The meeting involved Share-Net's members (experts in SRHR and HIV/AIDS) but also experts from other MDG areas who shared insights from their own fields. This document is the result of an afternoon of discussion in eight groups, each focusing on a different MDG.

    This report summarizes HIV prevalence and the associations between HIV serostatus and key characteristics and behaviors of adult women and men in 22 developing countries, primarily in sub- Saharan Africa. Data come from Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and AIDS Indicator Surveys (AIS) conducted between 2001 and 2006.     The report is a result of an evaluation study of "The Networking for Policy Change: an Advocacy Training Manual" published by the POLICY Project in October 1999 which was widely used by POLICY staff, trainers, and partners in more than 25 countries, as well as by donors, cooperating agencies (CAs), and development projects throughout the world. The study evaluated the manual's use, the usefulness and relevance of training conducted with the manual, and the qualitative and quantitative impacts attributed, in part, to putting the acquired advocacy skills into practice. …

    This year's State of the World Population report examines the adolescents' condition, in the context of changing social norms and lifestyles, including weakening of family support systems, amid globalization and urbanization. The report provides country-specific examples of projects that combine life skills education, including sexuality education, and peer counselling with access to services and points out the high costs and social consequences of failing to adequately meet adolescents' reproductive health and rights.
