  1. HIV and sexual and reproductive health programming: innovative approaches to integrated service delivery

This compendium has profiled and analysed 11 case studies on integrated service delivery in the context of EMTCT from 9 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. All of the examples demonstrate a general trend towards the implementation of integrated service delivery models supported by policy frameworks adopted in country and by service organizations at the facility level. These promising practices are by no means exhaustive or geographically representative. They do, however, contain valuable and practical vignettes of integrated service delivery in countries with generalized HIV epidemics. …

  6. UNAIDS Middle East and North Africa regional report on AIDS 2011

In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, the HIV epidemic has been on the rise since 2001. Although the overall HIV prevalence in the region is still low, the rise in new infections has put MENA among the top two regions in the world with the fastest growing HIV epidemic. The rise in the estimated number of people living with HIV in the region presumably is the result of an increased HIV prevalence among key populations at higher risk and a forward transmission of the virus to a larger number of individuals who are generally at lower risk of infection.

From a worldwide assessment to explore the needs for a Global Association for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) Education, it became clear all respondents want to exchange their good practices. However, to be able to focus on educating mainstream organizations about sexual diversity, several challenges need to be faced. They do have first hand experience with discrimination but usually lack the educational expertise to translate such knowledge into effective interventions for mainstream target groups. …

  8. Getting in line: coordinating responses for children affected by HIV and AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa

Only one in every eight households containing orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in African countries received any support from an external source (UNICEF, 2008). This is a reflection of how governments, both rich and poor, have ignored obligations ratified in conventions to ensure the social protection of vulnerable children (United Nations, 1989). Consequently, a disproportionate proportion of the financial burden of care of vulnerable children is borne by affected families and communities. …

The US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) was reauthorized in June 2008 with a threefold increase in funds, and a broader, more explicit mandate to improve health in the low- and middle-income countries that it funded.
