    Recent research highlights the need for the assessment of the impact of HIV and AIDS on education in the Caribbean as integral to its mitigation. The analysis presented in this paper is the first to attempt such an assessment. Although only preliminary evaluations of the effects upon the supply of education are made, it is clear that HIV and AIDS may have a significant impact on the education systems in the region. In addition to the quantifiable impact, the impacts of HIV and AIDS may be disproportionate in small states, which predominate in the region. …

  2. The effect of HIV/AIDS on educational attainment

    Using data from Demographic and Health Surveys for eleven countries in sub-Saharan Africa,the authorestimates the effect of local HIV prevalence on individual human capital investment. The authorfinds that the HIV/AIDS epidemic has reduced human capital investment: living in an area with higher HIV prevalence is associated with lower levels of completed schooling and slower progress through school. These results are consistent with a model of human capital investment in which parents and children respond to changes in the expected return to schooling driven by mortality risk.

  6. The "Education Vaccine" against HIV

    This article focuses on the correlation between HIV infection and the level of education, the latter being a good proxy indicator for a person's overall socio-economic status. If the hypothesis holds true that, beyond the initial stage of the AIDS pandemic, education reduces the risk of HIV infection, then the new HIV infections will gradually become concentrated among illiterate and poor people as the epidemic spreads among the population.

  9. Orphanhood and the long-run impact on children

    This paper presents unique evidence that orphanhood matters in the long-run for health and education outcomes, in a region of Northwestern Tanzania, an area deeply affected by HIV-AIDS in Africa. We use a sample of non-orphans surveyed in 1991-94, who were traced and reinterviewed in 2004. A large proportion, 23 percent, lost one or more parents before the age of 15 in this period, allowing us to identify the impact of orphanhood shocks. Since a substantial proportion reaches adulthood by 2004, we can also assess permanent health and education impacts of orphanhood. …

    This analysis is based on applications of the AIDS Impact Model (AIM). At least two alternative population projections are used for each country (Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya and Uganda).
