    This report presents the findings from the 1832 primary and secondary school respondents across Britain, a subsection of the total sample of 2163 teaching and non-teaching staff in schools and colleges surveyed by YouGov. The survey asked staff about their experiences of homophobic bullying of pupils in their schools and the inclusion of sexual orientation issues in their classrooms.     This article, based on empirical qualitative data gained from a survey and interviews with a group of early childhood educators, argues for the inclusion of sexual differences, or more specifically, gay and lesbian equity issues, in approaches to anti-bias. The article examines the discourses that prevail in the field, that perpetuate the perceived irrelevance, invisibility and exclusion of lesbian and gay issues in early childhood settings and education generally. …

  3. Working with transgender children and their classmates in pre-adolescence: Just be supportive

    This study documents a school district’s coordinated response to an elementary student’s social transition from a gender variant boy to a female gender expression. Data were gathered through analysis of journal entries, lesson plans, and interviews with the child, guardian, and district personnel. Stakeholders reported a favorable outlook on the transition, particularly in the areas of classroom and school interventions, peer involvement, and maintaining safety for all.   4. Playgrounds and prejudice: elementary school climate in the United States. A survey of students and teachers

    Students’ school education consists of not only what they are explicitly taught in the classroom, but also what they implicitly learn through the language, attitudes and actions of other students and teachers. When these attitudes, remarks and actions are unsupportive or hostile, they create a school climate that can negatively impact students’ feelings of safety and their interest in school and learning. Understanding school climate is an important first step in ensuring that all students feel safe and supported in their learning environments. …

  6. Homophobia in schools in Eastern Europe: program and abstracts

    The main aim of the seminar is to address how homosexuality is dealt with in (primary and secondary) schools in Eastern Europe, what is the situation of GLBT pupils/students in these schools and how GLBT teachers are treated at their workplace in schools. The seminar is organized as part of the European research project 'Citizens in Diversity: A Four Nation Study on Homophobia and Fundamental Rights' financed by the European Commission. Selected results from the research will be presented at the final round table discussion (see program).

  7. Homophobic bullying in Britain's schools: the teachers' report

    Stonewall's 2009 research The Teachers' Report found that homophobic bullying affects more than the 150,000 gay pupils we already knew to be affected from The School Report. Nine in ten secondary school teachers and more than two in five primary school teachers say homophobic bullying occurs in their school. Teachers explained that gay pupils are not the sole targets for homophobic bullying as pupils suffer homophobic bullying regardless of their sexual orientation. …

    Invitations were extended to the 149 English local authorities and the 32 Scottish local authorities to participate in Stonewall's first Education Equality Index on preventing and tackling homophobic bullying in Britain's schools. 35 leading local authorities from across England and Scotland entered, making it a highly competitive benchmarking exercise.
