  2. Sexual orientation and gender identity and the protection of forced migrants

Around the world, people face abuse, arbitrary arrest, extortion, violence, severe discrimination and lack of official protection because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Authors discuss both the challenges faced and examples of good practice in securing protection for LGBTI forced migrants.

  3. Strengthening national responses to HIV and adolescents in emergency situations: lessons learned from Côte d'Ivoire and Haiti

many years, and a growing number of organizations are including a focus on young people, HIV/ASRH and humanitarian settings into their work. Despite this, however, there is on‐going concern that young people in general, and adolescents in particular (10-19 years) do not receive sufficient ttention in humanitarian settings, and that this has both important immediate implications for their health during the emergencies, and also much longer-term implications for them, their families and their communities. This report aims to respond to these concerns. …

  4. The road to safety. Strengthening protection for LGBTI refugees in Uganda and Kenya

In this report, Human Rights First has provided a comprehensive road map of practical steps that the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the U.S. government, host states, and other key actors should take to protect LGBTI refugees from violence and provide them with equal access to protection and effective durable solutions. This road map will be particularly useful as UNHCR, U.S. agencies, and other actors take steps to implement commitments to address the gaps in protection facing vulnerable LGBTI refugees. …

  5. Mobility, migration and HIV vulnerability of populations along the ports of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden: Situation and response analysis

The relationship between HIV and mobility is widely recognized. While mobility and migration are not risk factors for HIV by themselves, the often harsh, unsafe and isolated conditions surrounding the mobility process can give rise to behaviours strongly associated with increased vulnerability to HIV, while also posing barriers to access to HIV prevention, treatment and care. …

  6. HIV/AIDS and conflicts: micro evidence from Burundi

This paper studies the relationship between civil war and HIV/AIDS in Burundi. It contributes to the empirical literature by providing micro level evidence using an identication strategy based on original data on the dynamics of rebel movements. The presence of exit and entry points from and to rebel safe havens is used to generate exogenous variation in con ict intensity. These points are plausibly assumed to serve as starting or end points for rebel attack, but are not directly related to HIV/AIDS or correlated with unobservables. …

  7. Reproductive health for refugees by refugees in Guinea IV: Peer education and HIV knowledge, attitudes, and reported practices

Peer education has long been used to promote HIV awareness and reduce risk. However, little has been written about its use in refugee settings. This study aimed to assess whether refugee peer education could improve HIV knowledge, attitudes and practices among Guinean refugees. The study also assessed whether gender, age or formal education were more strongly associated to improved HIV outcomes than peer education. Data was collected through a cross-sectional survey of 889 men and women in 23 camps throughout the Forest Region, Guinea. …

  8. HIV/AIDS, security and conflict: making the connections

The interconnections between conflict and HIV/AIDS are more complex and less obvious than is often thought. HIV/AIDS affects the lives of many: those people caught up in conflict, those who are the protagonists in conflicts, and those whose role it is to provide security during and after conflict. The AIDS, Security and Conflict Initiative (ASCI) undertook research over a number of years to examine the connections, to gather evidence and to advance analysis. …

Parts 1 and 2 of this guide focus on the behavioural measures of combination prevention. Education in emergencies is about more than just providing teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy. …
