    Teaching sexual and HIV and AIDS education in schools has been the subject of debate and discussion for a while now southern Africa. The debates have mainly centred around three key issues – at what stage to introduce it, what kind of curricula is appropriate and who is qualified to provide such teaching. South Africa is one the few countries in the region that have made attempts to introduce sexual and HIV and AIDS education at the secondary school level.   2. Empowering teachers to change youth practices: evaluating teacher delivery and responses to the FLHE Programme in Edo State, Nigeria

    School-based programming is one of the most common approaches to HIV/AIDS prevention among youth. This paper presents the history and development of the Family Life and HIV Education (FLHE) programme in Edo State, Nigeria and results of evaluation of teacher actions and responses to training in its delivery. Results indicate that teachers benefited from the training, were aware of new and/or existing teaching resources and began to teach about HIV/AIDS. Teachers expressed that the programme facilitated open dialogue about HIV/AIDS. …

  3. National teacher training HIV endline survey Malawi, 2009

    The first cohort of trainee teachers who participated in the Teacher Training College (TTC) programme finished in August 2009. Theatre for a Change (TfaC) contracted independent consultants to carry out an impact assessment on the TTC programme to identify its strengths and weaknesses. TfaC will use this impact assessment to inform the programme’s development. This report assesses the programme’s impact by comparing the results of the baseline survey, conducted at the beginning of the programme in October 2008, with the results of the endline survey, conducted in August 2009. …

    This briefing is a summary of the key findings of an online survey designed to find out from 16- to 25-year-olds what their experience of sex and relationships education (SRE) was at school, what topics they were taught and what made their SRE particularly good or bad. In total 1,709 self-selected young people responded to the survey.

  5. Youth Visioning for Island Living final reporting on HIV/AIDS awareness in Papua New Guinea (PNG)

    We decided to implement this project here in our province (Western Highlands Province, WHP) among 30 institutions due to the fact that there is no decrease to the spread of HIV/AIDS here. HIV/AIDS is on the rise here (PNG) amongst young people. Many young people including schooling teenagers have died of HIV/AIDS. It involves teachers as well, among many who are dying daily in the Province and the country as a whole. This landmark report describes the findings of a five-year study in elementary, middle and high schools in 37 school districts. Included are 111 actual case studies of the incidents reported to the researchers, ranging from name-calling to 22 assaults and 8 gang rapes.

  8. Process evaluation of a school-based HIV/AIDS intervention in South Africa

    This paper presents a process evaluation that assessed the fidelity and quality of implementation, as well as the acceptability and subjective evaluations of a HIV/AIDS intervention among students and teachers. Methods: The process evaluation was conducted as part of a cluster randomized controlled trial of a theory- and evidence-based school HIV/AIDS intervention in Cape Town. The intervention was designed for grade 8 high school students and delivered by teachers over a six-month period. Twenty-six schools participated in the trial, 13 in the intervention group and 13 in the control group. …
