  2. Intervention Strategies that Work for Youth: Summary of FOCUS on Young Adults - End of program Report

    This paper reports on programs that have helped young people in developing countries practise healthier behaviours, including delaying sexual debut, reducing the number of sexual partners, and increasing the use of methods of preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV/AIDS. It is addressed to program planners, administrators, policymakers, and donors interested in developing evidence-based strategies and programs to promote better health for youth.

  3. HIV/AIDS in health, education and participation: an action space for youth involvement in the SADC Region

    In the SADC region, the HIV/AIDS rate is one of the fastest growing. This is especially true in the case of young adults and adolescent children. It is important to begin indoctrinating these children with comprehensive health skills and stronger self esteem to protect themselves. Mitchell presents strategies for both formal and nonformal education to reform education systems to begin preparing youth to assume the physical responsibilities to prevent the further spread of HIV/AIDS. Youth needs to be targeted to become the voice to speak to their peers and change the course of this epidemic.

  4. HIV/AIDS and sex education among the youth in Zambia: towards behavioural change

    This article addresses how sex education in Zambia has changed over the course of time, particularly due to the spread of HIV/AIDS. The article is based on fieldwork conducted by the author in Zambia during six periodsbetween 1992 and 2003, and additional literature on HIV/AIDS education. The research conducted by the author between 1992 and 2001 focused primarily on female initiation rites, while that of 2002-2003 focused on the knowledge of HIV/AIDS among Zambian youth and how the knowledge is passed on by teachers at primary schools, but also by health workers, peer educators, and parents. …

    UNICEF’s Education for HIV Prevention and Mitigation Programme (EHPM) focuses on strengthening the capacity of adolescents and communities to fulfill their rights to correct information and appropriate skills enabling them to make correct choices for HIV prevention. EHPM will contribute to a reduction in risk-behaviour among adolescents through provision of life skills education for HIV prevention and mitigate the effects of HIV/AIDS on children’s access to basic education through the development and implementation of national level systems and promotion of school-community support systems. …

    HIV infection rates among young Kenyan women outnumber those of young men by nearly six to one. Younger adolescents (10-15 years old) get most of their information about sexuality from their peers, who need to be equipped with accurate information and skills in order to better carry out their communication role.The Kenya Girl Guides Association (KGGA) reaches over 100,000 school-going adolescents and has recently embarked on a "Peer Education on HIV and AIDS Prevention" program to equip girls and their peers with information and skills regarding HIV prevention and care. …

Zimbabwe relatively high secondary school enrollment rates make secondary school a potential source for providing young people with the knowledge and skills they need to protect themselves from risks and lead healthy lifestyles.
