  3. Illusions of Care. Lack of Accountability for Reproductive Rights in Argentina

    This 52-page report documents the many obstacles women and girls face in getting the reproductive health care services to which they are entitled, such as contraception, voluntary sterilization procedures, and abortion after rape. The most common barriers to care include long delays in providing services, unnecessary referrals to other clinics, demands for spousal permission contrary to law, financial barriers, and in some cases outright denial of care.

  6. Intersexuality and sexual rights in southern Brazil

    This paper reports of the socio‐medical management of intersexuality in a teaching hospital in southern Brazil. Findings reveal that the ‘search for sex’ in the body treats sex as a medical‐diagnostic category constructed during decision‐making negotiations. In the course of the various bodily ‘regulations’ and ‘corrections’ imposed, the insufficiency of a model in which categories are based around a sexual dichotomy is revealed. …

  7. Risky groups, risky behaviour, and risky persons: Dominating discourses on youth sexual health

    Significant public health attention has been focused on the problems of youth sexual behaviour. Empirical public health research in this area has attempted to account for mostly negative sexual health outcomes (e.g. sexually transmitted infections and teenage pregnancies) by examining individual characteristics and risk-taking behaviour. Public health practice has followed suit, focusing primarily on modifying sexual risk behaviour and lifestyle ‘choices’. …

    This report summarizes findings and recommendations of a year-long exercise undertaken by the Women’s Refugee Commission and Save the Children - in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to map existing adolescent sexual and reproductive health programs and document good practices. The work was accomplished through a practitioner survey and humanitarian funding analyses; key informant interviews; and collection of good practice case studies.

  11. Addressing sexual health and HIV in school. Four initiatives from sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America

    This publication describes three German-supported initiatives in Africa (specifically in Guinea, Mozambique and Tanzania) and one in Latin America (a six-country regional initiative). All integrate sexual health and HIV prevention within school systems. The three African initiatives operate within generalized epidemics driven largely by unprotected sex between men and women. In Latin America general prevalence in the countries described here is well below one percent, and much less among young people. …

  15. First sexual intercourse and subsequent regret in three developing countries

    The authors analyzed the reasons behind first sex, cases of regret, and the association between reasons and regret. They provided a questionnaire to 8,495 high school students ages 14–18 years residing in the Philippines, El Salvador, and Peru. Sexually active participants were asked what circumstances led them to become involved in their first sexual relationship. They also were asked whether they regretted having already had sexual relationships. …
