  2. Antiretroviral drug access and behavior change

    Access to antiretroviral (ARV) drugs in Sub-Saharan Africa has rapidly expanded - from fewer than 10,000 people treated in 2000 to more than 8 million in 2011. To measure the impact of this expansion, it is necessary to identify the behavioral response of individuals to drug access. This paper combines geocoded information about the timing of introduction of ARVs in all Kenyan health facilities with two waves of geocoded population surveys to estimate the impact of proximity to an ARV provider on risky sexual behavior. …

    Este trabajo de investigación fue motivado por la preocupación que ha generado la creciente infección de VIH/SIDA entre las mujeres, principalmente "amas de casa" del Ecuador. La hipótesis de partida fue que esta realidad tiene directa relación con los patrones culturales de género existentes en el país, los cuales hacen más vulnerable a ese grupo poblacional. Para la investigación se realizaron entrevistas semi-estructuradas con 11 mujeres y 10 hombres viviendo con VIH/SIDA de las ciudades de Quito y Guayaquil. …

  5. Blame and banishment: the underground HIV epidemic affecting children in Eastern Europe and Central Asia

    This report highlights the issues faced by children living with HIV, adolescents engaged in risky behaviors, pregnant women using drugs, and the more than one million children and young people who live or work on the streets of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region. Marginalized young people are exposed on a daily basis to multiple risks, including drug use, commercial sex and other exploitation and abuse, putting them at higher risk of contracting HIV. The trends are especially troubling, as the region is home to 3.7 million injecting drug users - almost a quarter of the world's total. …

    El presente estudio se realizó con travestis trabajadores sexuales (TTS), mujeres trabajadoras sexuales (MTS), hombres trabajadores sexuales (HTS) y hombres que tienen sexo con hombres (HSH) en el centro de la Ciudad de Guatemala durante 1998 y 1999. El trabajo se encaminó para poder precisar las interacciones entre individuos y contexto social en los campos de la salud y la sexualidad, situación legal y derechos humanos.
