  1. HIV/AIDS and teacher absenteeism: implications for attainment of quality education in Uganda

    This powerpoint presents a qualitative study carried out in the districts of Bushenyi (rural without civil conflict), Katakwi (rural and affected by armed conflict) and Kampala (urban). It looks at the nature and magnitude of teachers’ absenteeism and the extent to which HIV/AIDS has escalated it and assesses the impact of HIV/AIDS-based teachers’ absenteeism on the attainment of the quality of education. The study also proposes functional solutions to address the causes and effects of teachers absenteeism with specific emphasis on HIV/AIDS-based absenteeism.

  4. Integrating a youth-based stigma and discrimination reduction curriculum in higher education: St Xavier’s College

    Stigmatizing attitudes towards people living with HIV (PLHIV) are common among young people. Yet there are few opportunities for youth to be exposed to interventions that address the key drivers of stigma and discrimination, namely lack of awareness of stigma and its harmful consequences, social judgment and fear of infection through casual contact. This project demonstrated that higher education can be an effective entry point for stigma reduction, by working with several groups and environments, in this case the faculty, students and college. …

  11. Linkage to Care for HIV-Positive Adolescents: A Multisite Study of the Adolescent Medicine Trials Units of the Adolescent Trials Network

    This journal article is a study of adolescent linkage to HIV care in the United States. The study seeks to understand the issues with linkage to care among adolescents. The study shows that multiple models exist for linkage to care and that it is important to have formal and informal community relationships for linkage to care to work among adolescents. The barriers that linkage to care for adolescents face is structural rather than due to adolescent characteristics.     This publication is the result of a partnership between UNESCO and the Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+).   13. Indigenous knowledge of HIV/AIDS among High School students in Namibia

    The study explored the indigenous names for HIV/AIDS and its symptoms. Qualitative data was gathered through focus groups with students from 18 secondary schools across six educational districts. People living with HIV/AIDS were called names meaning prostitute: ihule, butuku bwa sihule, and shikumbu. Names such askibutu bwa masapo (bone disease),katjumba (a young child), kakithi (disease), and shinangele (very thin person) described AIDS. Derogatory names like mbwa (dog), esingahogo (pretender), ekifi (disease), and shinyakwi noyana (useless person) were also used. …

  14. HIV sero-status disclosure in the school context: experiences of adolescents perinatally infected with HIV in Uganda

    In this paper, we use data from Uganda to examine disclosure of HIV sero-status in the school context by adolescents perinatally infected with HIV. We begin by presenting evidence of the existence of stigma and discrimination in schools from the perspectives of school officials, in-school young people perinatally infected with HIV, and other students. We then examine the level of disclosure of sero-status to school officials and friends by adolescents perinatally infected with HIV. …

  15. Treatment Access for Positive MSM in the Asia Pacific

    In collaboration with various community-based organizations, APN+ conducted a peer-led mixed method research project in six Asian countries to document the range of services available for MSM and transgender people living with HIV and to identify barriers to access and use of these services.
