  1. "The nail that sticks out gets hammered down": LGBT bullying and exclusion in Japanese schools

    Based on interviews with more than 50 LGBT students and former students in fourteen prefectures throughout Japan—as well as teachers, officials, and academic experts—this report documents bullying, harassment, and discrimination in Japanese schools based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression, and the poor record of schools when it comes to appropriately responding to and preventing such incidents.

    The Engaging Young People in Sexuality Education (EYPSE) research project lead by Emeritus Professor Bruce Johnson addresses two questions: What are young people’s views on school-based sexuality and relationships education? In what ways could sexuality and relationships education be improved? The report focuses on findings from the first stage of the research project, consisting of an online survey of over 2,000 students in 31 secondary schools in South Australia and Victoria.   3. Integrating a youth-based stigma and discrimination reduction curriculum in higher education: St Xavier’s College

    Stigmatizing attitudes towards people living with HIV (PLHIV) are common among young people. Yet there are few opportunities for youth to be exposed to interventions that address the key drivers of stigma and discrimination, namely lack of awareness of stigma and its harmful consequences, social judgment and fear of infection through casual contact. This project demonstrated that higher education can be an effective entry point for stigma reduction, by working with several groups and environments, in this case the faculty, students and college. …

  4. Teaching diversities: same sex attracted young people, CALD communities, and arts-based community education

    The teaching diversities project has been funded by Victoria University and represents a collaboration with the Centre for Multicultural Youth in recognition of the particular needs (and risks) of doubly-marginalised young people who identify as both same sex-attracted, and those from multicultural backgrounds. The vulnerability of these young people hinges on the intersection of homophobia in some cultural communities and also racism within some lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) communities. …

  5. Sexuality Education in Asia: Are We Delivering? An Assessment from a Rights-based Perspective

    This report presents the first investigation of school-based sexuality education in Asia through a human rights perspective. The study reflected in this report looked to provide new insights that could help strengthen programming by assessing how States are delivering on their responsibility to provide sexuality education in schools. The main focus is on the laws, policies and strategic plans through which governments provide the enabling environment for sexuality education.
