    Education level and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) knowledge in Kenya investigated secondary and university students’ HIV/AIDS knowledge in the City of Nairobi, Kenya.     Universities and institutions of higher learning in general consist mainly of young people in the 17-24 year old category, most of whom are sexually active, and therefore most vulnerable to HIV infection.   6. Do teenagers respond to HIV risk information? Evidence from a field experiment in Kenya

    We use a randomized experiment to test whether and what information changes teenagers' sexual behavior in Kenya. Providing information on the relative risk of HIV infection by partner's age led to a 28 percent decrease in teen pregnancy, an objective proxy for the incidence of unprotected sex. Self-reported sexual behavior data suggests substitution away from older (riskier) partners and toward same-age partners. In contrast, the official abstinence-only HIV curriculum had no impact on teen pregnancy. …

  13. HIV/AIDS in Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology: a case study

    This report sets out the findings of a case study commissioned by Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) Working on Higher Education, on the way HIV/AIDS affects JKUAT, and to document the responses and coping mechanisms. The purpose of the studies is to generate understanding of the way the disease is affecting universities and to identify responses of staff, students and management that might profitably be shared with sister institutions in similar circumstances.

    This document contains four papers that give guidance on what universities can do to address the challenge of HIV/AIDS. They provide an overview of what tertiary institutions in Africa are doing to combat HIV/AIDS, offer practical guidance on how universities can go about the process of developing and implementing institutional policies on HIV/AIDS, present a case study of how one teacher training college in Kenya undertook this task, and suggest what lessons have been learned from these various experiences.
