  1. Implementing evidence-based substance use prevention curricula with fidelity: the role of teacher training

    It is widely recognized that teacher training affects the fidelity with which evidence-based substance use prevention curricula are implemented. This article presents the results of a 2005 survey of teachers from a nationally representative sample of 1721 public middle schools in the US (78.1% response rate).It measured fidelity along two dimensions (adherence and dose) and also assessed the number of hours, recency, and perceived effectiveness of teachers’ training, as well as the degree to which adherence was emphasized during training. …

  2. The impact of teachers’ modifications of an evidenced-based HIV prevention intervention on program outcomes

    The degree to which evidence-based program outcomes are affected by modifications is a significant concern in the implementation of interventions. The ongoing national implementation of an evidence-based HIV prevention program targeting grade six students in The Bahamas [Focus on Youth in The Caribbean (FOYC)] offers an opportunity to explore factors associated with teachers’ modification of FOYC lessons and to examine the impact of types and degrees of modifications on student outcomes.     This document provides an in-depth look at the current landscape of bias and peer victimization as reported by students and teachers from across the nation. In addition to examining various types of bias, including those based on race/ethnicity, religion, body size, and ability, this report provides a focused look at LGBTQ issues in secondary schools.   7. UNESCO review of higher education institutions' responses to HIV and AIDS. The West Indies: the case of the University of the West Indies

    UNESCO has undertaken a study of the response of Universities to the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the University of The West Indies (UWI) was selected as one of these. When reviewed against the general overview of the response of the tertiary sector internationally, the UWI shows a strong commitment to HIV and AIDS management and to the development of a comprehensive and innovative programme. The existing UWI response is summarised followed by some of the interesting observations and lessons learned and some suggestions for expanding the programme and the development of new initiatives. …

  8. Strengthening the education sector response to HIV and AIDS in the Caribbean: UNESCO/WB partnership in support of Caricom strategy in education and HIV and AIDS

    This report presents the findings and outcomes of the three joint UNESCO/WB missions to Guyana, Jamaica and St. Lucia, and elaborates on next steps identified for action at both national and regional levels. The report also sets these findings and next steps within the broader context of the Caribbean plan for action and presents in its appendices, sample resources to guide the development of a comprehensive response to HIV and AIDS by the education sector.

  9. New challenges for schools AIDS education within an evolving HIV pandemic

    This paper describes the evolution of school-based HIV prevention programmes and their theoretical frameworks, as well as present barriers to their implementation. Examples of several best practices will highlight the key role of the education sector in mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS. The paper concludes with an innovative suggestion for the establishment of a new profession: the AIDS educator.
