    Cet ouvrage recense les effets de la pandémie sur l'offre et la demande dans l'enseignement primaire et secondaire au Burkina Faso, ainsi que les réponses apportées pour limiter ces effets. Il en ressort avant tout une très forte stigmatisation dans le milieu scolaire. Celle-ci entraine notamment une faible participation des enseignants vivants avec le VIH dans les efforts de prévention, une formation insuffisante des enseignants, ainsi qu'un manque de prise en charge des orphelins et un accès limité aux soins pour les personnes séro positives.

This paper points out the underlying problem of HIV/AIDS in the context of educational development, and also identifies opportunities for remedial action and positive enablement, which is that given the importance of education as a transformative force, there is little doubt the education sectors in these countries can become a site for containment or disaster.

  9. HIV-positive educators in South African public schools: predictions for prophylaxis and antiretroviral therapy

    While it has long been suspected that HIV prevalence among educators is high, there has been no scientific study to assess this. Responding to the need for empirical evidence, the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) commissioned the Human Sciences Research Council-led consortium to conduct this nation-wide research assessing the prevalence of HIV/AIDS, as well as issues such as the health status and attrition of our educators.     Analysing the extent and severity of HIV/AIDS among educators without looking at the broader context within which schools operate, provides only a partial understanding of the immense challenges facing the education sector in South Africa.     Le SNEA-B et le SNESS, dans le cadre de leur projet commun, Education Pour Tous ( EPT) et lutte contre le SIDA et les IST à l'école ont diligenté cette étude qui se fixe pour principaux objectifs de : faire la situation de la séroprévalence chez les enseignants ; évaluer à l'échelle du pays, la manifestation de la pandémie en milieu enseignant ; apprécier l'impact du VIH/SIDA sur l'offre et la demande d'éducation ; proposer des stratégies et des actions concrètes pour permettre aux deux syndicats de planifier des interventions pertinentes.

    The study described here explores, for three regions with generalized HIV and AIDS epidemics, the impact of the epidemic on teacher supply now and up to 2015, the target date for the achievement of education for all. The study uses the Ed-SIDA model to make projections of the impact on education supply for 53 countries in three areas hardest hit by the epidemic: sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean and the Greater Mekong sub-region of south-east Asia. …

    This report provides the first overview of education attrition and mortality trends not reliant on estimates, models or projections, but on primary data contained in government registers. As such there was no sampling frame and no statistical deduction in terms of attrition - only analysis of hard data.The aim of the study is to estimate gross educator attrition rates and trends, including an analysis of the causes of these by age and gender, in the public schools system in South Africa. The magnitude and dimensions of educaor attrition and its components, including mortality were examined.
