  5. Can any teacher teach sexuality and HIV/AIDS? Perspectives of South African Life Orientation teachers

    In this paper we explore the perceived desirable characteristics of South African Life Orientation teachers for teaching sexuality and HIV/AIDS. We also investigate the extent to which these characteristics can be understood as parts of a role script for teaching HIV/AIDS and sexuality. Data were collected from teachers who taught Grade Eight and Grade Nine students in South African public high schools. The teachers particularly emphasised the importance of personality and life experience as important characteristics for teaching sexuality and HIV/AIDS. …

  6. Tackling HIV/AIDS: Mass-media and international conferences. Soul City, Going to scale across borders: the Choose Life project

    Soul City, a multi-media health project in South Africa has been effective in imparting much needed information on health and development, and in changing attitudes and behaviour as well. Soul City works primarily within South Africa but the TV programme has been shown in a number of African countries as well. In the last two years Soul City has worked on a sponsored education booklet called Choose Life, aimed at 12-16 year olds in Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia. 1,331,000 copies of the booklet will be printed and distributed in the four countries in seven different languages. …

    This booklet is a positive prevention end-user guide for people living with HIV. Positive prevention methods aim to increase the self-esteem and confidence of people living with HIV to protect their own health and avoid passing HIV to others. They promote the rights of people to safer sexual relationships, the fulfillment on their reproductive choices and living a full and healthy life. Positive prevention represents a synergy between prevention, treatment, care and support.

    GIMME 5, Life Orientation Game is an awareness game made by Dr. David V. Kolnick in 2005. Played by four individuals, or two teams of two players, it is educational, affording the players the opportunity to make choices, to strategize, and to take risks in order to win. The board is a lesson. Starting from the hut, the house, the shack and the mansion, it shows that HIV/AIDS affects all people, no matter their station in life. The stepping-stones and the bridges, used here instead of the usual board squares, portray the hurdles the player has to overcome as he/she progresses through life. …
