    In recent years, Latin America and the Caribbean have seen progress in stemming the impact of HIV. Increased access to treatment, rapid testing technologies, coordinated prevention and education efforts, and the virtual elimination of mother-to-child transmission have helped reduce the overall HIV prevalence rate. While encouraging, this figure masks serious, localized epidemics. While HIV prevalence is generally low, prevalence among key affected populations—such as men who have sex with men, transgender women, and sex workers—is particularly high. …

    This report presents an analysis of public education policies and considers where these policies intersect with programmes aimed at preventing and reducing discrimination and violence against LGBT people.     Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the written reflections of aspiring principals in two principal-preparation courses where social justice is at the core of the content and which address sexual orientation as part of the responsibility of a social justice leader. Data Collection: Two instructors in a leadership-preparation program incorporated reflection assignments into their respective social-justice-related courses.   6. Working with transgender children and their classmates in pre-adolescence: Just be supportive

    This study documents a school district’s coordinated response to an elementary student’s social transition from a gender variant boy to a female gender expression. Data were gathered through analysis of journal entries, lesson plans, and interviews with the child, guardian, and district personnel. Stakeholders reported a favorable outlook on the transition, particularly in the areas of classroom and school interventions, peer involvement, and maintaining safety for all.   7. Embracing gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered youth in school-based settings

    Youth with invisible challenges constitute a special area of concern for child and youth care workers. Youth struggling with gender and sexual orientation are reported to comprise ten percent of our youth population yet they may often be unknown to teachers and other school personnel. These adolescents face unique challenges in developing their identity and gaining social acceptance. This paper explores the challenges faced by these youth, the consequences of underserving this population and proposes some strategies for improving their educational experience.
