  3. Financing the South African national strategic plan for HIV, STIs and TB 2012-2016. An analysis of funding, funding gaps and financing considerations

    The purpose of this paper is to analyse resource requirements to implement the NSP as well as available sources of funding so as to determine financial gaps and potential strategies to fill those gaps. The analysis was based on a review of relevant costing reports and models prepared recently in South Africa. These reports and models are referred to and referenced in the body of this report. The analysis provides a snap shot of funding needs and gaps for HIV and TB as of mid-way through the 2013/14 financial year as the collection of financial data for this analysis was completed by that date.

  10. Evaluation of an HIV/AIDS peer education programme in a South African workplace

    This paper describes an evaluation of a workplace HIV/AIDS peer-educational program. A cross-sectional study of 900 employees was conducted in 2001 across three areas in South Africa and measured the impact of a peer-education program on knowledge, attitudes towards people living with HIV/AIDS, perceptions of risk and condom use. Peer-education had no impact on any outcome. Some 59% of subjects had good knowledge, 62% positive attitude towards people living with HIV/AIDS, 34% reported frequently using condoms, 73% perceived themselves at low risk for infection. …

Positive prevention represents a synergy between prevention, treatment, care and support.

  15. Reducing HIV stigma and discrimination: a critical part of national AIDS programmes

    Despite the pervasiveness of HIV-related stigma and discrimination in national HIV epidemics and their harmful impact in terms of public health and human rights, they remain seriously neglected issues in most national responses to HIV. National AIDS programmes - together with key partners - can take concrete steps to address these critical obstacles and help pave the way towards universal access to prevention, treatment, care and support. …
