    This report examines the problem of sexual violence against girls in Zambian schools. In Zambia, many girls are raped, sexually abused, harassed, and assaulted by teachers and male classmates. They are also subjected to sexual harassment and attack while travelling to and from school. Such abuse is a devastating and often overlooked manifestation of the gender-based violence that occurs in numerous settings in Zambia and other countries throughout the world. …

    The past decade has witnessed a dramatic increase in awareness about early and forced marriage of girls as a widespread violation of human rights. In short, early and forced marriage exacerbate gender inequality and the likelihood of poor outcomes throughout life. Combining public education about the negative effects of early and forced marriage with positive preventive strategies is valuable. The Association for the Struggle Against Violence Against Women (ALVF) in Cameroon is one such example. …

  3. Because I am a Girl. So, what about boys? The State of the World's Girls 2011

    Because I am Girl is an annual report published by Plan which assesses the current state of the world's girls. While women and children are recognised as specific categories in policy and planning, girls' particular needs and rights are often ignored. These reports provide evidence, including the voices of girls themselves, as to why they need to be treated differently from boys and from older women. The reports also make recommendations for action, showing policymakers and planners what can make a real difference to girls' lives all over the world.

  4. HIV and violence against women in Belize

    The overall objective of this study was to explore the potential intersections between two forms of violence against women (VAW) - partner violence and non-partner violence - among users of VAW and HIV services and to document their experiences, knowledge and perceptions on HIV and violence. The information was collected using a standardized questionnaire in each participant country in order to collect and compare data in a multi-country analysis.     Documento que describe la relación entreáviolencia contra la mujer y VIH/sida en América Latina y el Caribe. Dentro de las mujeres se describen las situaciones (sexo forzado, limitaciones para negociar sexo seguro y sexo recompensado) y grupos más vulnerables (nivel socioeconómico bajo, trabajadoras en puestos de baja remuneración, minorías étnicas, embarazadas yápoblaciones móviles).   14. The association between violence against women and HIV: evidence from a national population-based survey in Zimbabwe

    Violence against women has been associated with increased risk of HIV infection among women. In Zimbabwe, both violence against women and HIV are widespread. Although Zimbabwe has been experiencing a significant decline of adult HIV prevalence in recent years, women remain disproportionately infected and affected by the epidemic. The 2005-06 Zimbabwe Demographic and Health Survey (ZDHS) provides the first national estimate of the prevalence of violence against women and also the first population-based estimates of HIV prevalence and patterns. …
